DHCP error 0x79 – Resolve it now

by Gayathri R Nayak | Oct 31, 2020

Wondering how to fix the ‘DHCP error 0x79’? We can help you with it.

Here at Bobcares, we have seen several such DHCP-related errors as part of our Server Management Services for web hosts and online service providers.

Today we will take a look at the causes for this error and see how to fix it.

Reasons for DHCP error 0x79 to occur

Before we get into the solution part of this error, let’s see the reasons for this error to occur.

  • This error indicates that you have a predefined IP address on the computer and your device has assigned this IP address to some other device.
  • The IP address is beyond the scope of the DHCP range.

For instance, the error appears as below.

How we fix DHCP error 0x79

Now let’s see the solution our Support Engineers provide to our customers to get rid of this error message.

1. First, make sure to check the DHCP range on the router. Also, verify that the computer is set to obtain an address automatically.

2. Try to disable the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) on the network adapter. Here are the steps for doing it.

  • First, right-click on the Network icon in the System Tray and click on Network and Sharing Center.
  • Next, click on Change Adapter Settings.
  • After that, right-click on Network Adapter and Choose ‘Properties’.
  • Then uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6”.
  • Finally, click on OK.

3. Try unplugging the LAN cable and wireless connection

  • First, go to “Ethernet Adapter local area connection 2” properties.
  • Next, select the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”.
  • Now click on the Properties button.
  • Then, select the “Use the following IP address:” option and set the below IPs IP=192.1xx.1.10 subnet mask=255.255.255.0 default gateway = your router IP address such as 192.1xx.1.1
  • After that, from the second section, select “Use the following DNS server addresses:” set “PreferAlternate DNS server:” your router default IP for example 192.168.1.1
  • Finally, click on OK and try to connect through the LAN and then wireless.

4. You can also try disabling Wireless Connection #2 (Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptor) network adapter. You can find this by comparing the MAC address listed in the error message with the output of CMD>ipconfig /all.

5. Also, check the DHCP “lease” time of the router and make sure it is set as high as it can go.

6. services.mscLocate the DHCP Client service, so make sure that it is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic. In case, if the service is already Started then try to stop it and restart it.

7. Click on Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> right-click on Command Prompt, select “Run as Administrator” to open a command prompt. Then in the Command Prompt, execute the following commands one after the other.

#Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:

# Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

# Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

Finally, reboot the computer.

GET STARTED

I carefully followed your procedure, but I still get the same error message in the event manager. With ipv6 enabled, I can only get to parts of the internet. (after disabling ipv6 in the adapter, mentioned above, no access). In HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces, when I get a new entry, it has DhcpIPAddress 0.0.0.0, the DhcpServer is all 255s, and the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0. On a good machine, the addresses are as expected from my AT&T (Arris) router. (I factory reset the router, have re-installed my adapter SW and have two D-link adapters. so it’s not the router and not the adapter). I believe something is corrupted in the registry of this particular computer. It’s unable to get an IP from the router’s DHCP. Nothing I’ve tried restores it, and I don’t have a usable registry backup. Is there some limited set of keys that could be copied from a good machine to the one I have trouble with? Which keys would reset all the networking stuff and not mess up anything else?

DHCP issues

I have 2 workstation computers that will not connect to the network

I also have 2 printers that cannot connect to the network.

I cannot ping either machine. Also the client PCs cannot ping the DHCP server or the default gateway

The clients receive connection through a SonicWall

The workstation PCs give the  EventID 1001 DHCP Your computer was not assigned an address from the network

The clients PC's changed from (10.0.0.154 / 255.255.255.0) to  (169.254.21 /.53 255.255.0.0)

When i tried ipconfig /renew. its says error   unable to contact your DHCP server.

Any pointers?

The Computer Hero is an IT service provider.

you've got a section of the network that is disconnected from the the section of the network that the DHCP server and 2008 server are on. The clients can not see either of those but they can see other servers, i don't know if you have something wrong with the config in your switches / vlans or if you are just running dumb switches and you have a bad prot or patch cable. I'd start with a laptop in the switch that the DHCP server is in, make sure you can get an ip address, then work backwards following the uplink cables. till you find the switch that is causing the problem.

did you check your DHCP server to see if it is running and has avilable leases? If it is and does, area you running any VLANS? are these 4 on a single switch? maybe the uplink wire was pulled?

Yes the Lease is from 10.0.0.1 - 254

Addresses from 10.0.0.170-254 are free

I was able to get one of workstation back up by manually setting the ipv4 connections to 10.0.0.167 which matches the lease in the DHCP

Above hits the two big points.

Can try giving one of the machines a static IP, and try pining locally significant IPs (gateway and on to where the DHCP server may be)..

if the one machine is working normally with assigning a static, then it is your dhcp server, try a reboot first. if that does not do it, we need more info as to what os or physical device the dhcp server is.

The clients are now getting an event 1014  Name resolution for the name %1 timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

And Event 129 NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of discovery error. NtpClient will try again in %2 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: %1

i think the issue here could be the firewall. did you disable the dhcp of the sonicwall. try below steps

Unreliable Internet connection.  Like event log below.  Any ideas?

I solved the same problem by disabling my connection #2 wireless network adapter (Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter).  I found this by comparing the MAC address listed in the error message with the release of CMD > ipconfig/all.  Noticed that this adapter is continually attempted to communicate with my DHCP server, and I was not still use it.

You will have a page web that contains all the necessary drivers and software that came with your Dell computer when it left the factory. Don't forget to get the drivers and software for your version of Windows.

Note: the Dell service tag number is also available from the BIOS of the computer. If you do not have a sticker on the machine, reply here with your Dell model number and I should be able to tell the good key sequence to enter the BIOS.

  • The clock of my computer was not working, and I fixed it in the installer. But it is not fixed. What can I do?

I have a PowerSpec computer, running Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

Please clarify what you mean by

1. "I fixed it in the installation program."  You hear that you set the system clock in the BIOS configuration utility?

2. "it remains not fixed."  Do you mean that the time goes when you turn off the computer, or while it is running?

If you mean that when you turn the computer off and then on again, the time is more correct, then your RTC battery (aka battery CMOS or BIOS battery) must be replaced.  This should be neither difficult nor expensive on a tower computer, which is what most of the PowerSpec computers are (provide your model number for more details).

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/923100 MissCats Hi,

  • Do you have the latest changes on the computer?
  • You have security software installed on the computer?

I suggest that reset you the default Windows Update components and later try to install updates.

How to reset the Windows Update components?

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058

Also check out the article below and try the steps

If the previous step fails, then I suggest you temporary disable the security software installed on the computer and install 5 updates at a time, to check if it helps.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time that your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

How to fix DHCP error 0x79

Are you facing "DHCP error 0x79"? This guide will help you.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is a network management protocol mainly used to automate the process of configuring devices on IP networks, thereby enabling them to use network services such as DNS, NTP, and any communication protocol based on UDP or TCP. Here at Ibmi Media, we regularly help our Customers to fix DHCP related errors as part of our Server Support Services . In this context, we shall look into the main causes of this error and how to fix it.

What triggers DHCP error 0x79?

This error can occurs due the following reasons; i. When you have a predefined IP address on the computer and it has assigned the IP address to a different device. ii. When the IP address is beyond the scope of the DHCP range. When the error occurs, you will see an error message such as;

How to get rid of  DHCP error 0x79?

To solve this issue, follow the steps below; 1. Start by checking the DHCP range on the router. Also verify that the computer is ready to obtain an address automatically. 2. Then click on " Network and Sharing Center ". ii. Now click on Change Adapter Settings. iii. Next, right-click on Network Adapter and choose " Properties " where you should uncheck " Internet Protocol Version 6 ". iv. Finally, Click " OK " to effect changes made. 3. Next, select the option " Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) ". iii. Here click on the Properties button. iv. Now, select the option " Use the following IP address: " and set the the following; IP=192.1xx.1.10 subnet mask=255.255.255.0 default gateway = your router IP address such as 192.1xx.1.1 v. From the second option section, select " Use the following DNS server addresses: " where you should set " Prefer Alternate DNS server: " as your router's default IP address, for instance 192.168.1.2. vi. To end, click on " OK " and try to connect via the LAN and then the Wireless connection. 4. You can also attempt to disable Wireless Connect #2 ( Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptor ) network adapter. To get this, compare the MAC address listed in the error message with the output of the command " CMD>ipconfig /all ". 5. Also, you can check the DHCP " lease " time of the router and ensure that it is set the value as high as you prefer it to be. 6. Make sure the DHCP Client service " services.mscLocate " is started and set the Startup Type to Automatic. If this service is already started, first try to stop it and then restart it. 7. Now navigate via " Start >> Programs >> Accessories " and then right-click on the command prompt. Then select " Run as Administrator " to open a command prompt. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Windows 10 - WiFi DHCP not assigning address Just upgraded to Windows 10 on a HP2000 Notebook. The upgrade worked flawlessly with one exception. I performed the upgrade while wired to the network. When I switched to WiFi, the adapter showed "Limited Connectivity". Using Regedit, I looked at HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Tcpip/Parameters/Interfaces and found that my WiFi adapter was receiving a DHCP assigned address. In my home, I use DHCP statically assigned addresses and typically I assign the same IP to both wired and WiFi adapters on a given machine. What I didn't realize is that because the wired adapter had already been assigned the same DHCP address, the WiFi adapter somehow couldn't re-use the address it was given by the DHCP. After giving the Wifi adapter a different DHCP-assigned address than the wired adapter, it worked perfectly.
DNS assigned by DHCP not working Hi, 5 days ago my wifi connection stopped accepting the assigned DNS over DHCP. I'm not aware of making any changes to the configuration that could have led to this problem, there was one windows update relating to flash and the malicious software removal tool, but no others since the problem has occured Despite the network the adapter properties being set to "obtain DNS server address automatically" regardless of the network I connect to and the settings issued by the DHCP server, the DNS on my computer is set to 192.168.1.1. (other computers work fine) I have to manually assign the correct DNS server and change it each time I change network does anyone know what is happening? Thanks
Issue getting IP address from DHCP server Just had the problem again this morning on boot up no DHCP address and APIPA assigned. I disconnected from the wifi network and in cmd ran ipconfig /flushdns then connected to wifi network and received the DHCP address.
