4 Strategies for Persevering Through Difficult Tasks

No mud, no lotus..

Posted March 20, 2020 | Reviewed by Devon Frye

Even during times when life feels like a stroll through blooming meadows, we humans regularly find ourselves battling against gusts and gales on our way to reaching our goals. You want health? Push through the pain on the treadmill. You want academic success? Power through the laborious articles. You want dental hygiene? Breathe through the deafening drilling noises this close to your brain. You want harmonious relationships? Sweat through uncomfortable conversations with colleagues.

All that practice has made us rather skilled at finding ways to overcome ourselves and persevere at things that are aversive and unpleasant, and yet necessary for achieving our objectives. A recent study published in The European Journal of Personality —aptly titled " Doing Despite Disliking "—explored what it is that people can do in these instances of self-control conflicts to help them persist at everyday tasks.

For lead researcher Dr. Marie Hennecke, one of the biggest surprises of the study was the great variety of strategies that people have in their arsenals to help them get through what they are doing. Most of these creative strategies were a variety of regulatory processes such as changing the situation, focusing on something else, reappraising the task in a different way, or using sheer willpower. For each of these broad categories, Hennecke and her team found 19 different strategies that people used to accomplish their goals.

Here are 4 of the most successful self-regulatory strategies from the study, according to Dr. Hennecke.

CC0/Unsplash

1. Focus on the positive consequences of the activity.

This was the most popular and most frequently reported strategy from the study, and it can be applied in a variety of situations. For example, if you find yourself on a treadmill—exasperated and ready to give up—you could remind yourself of the good that you are doing to your physical and emotional wellbeing. Or if you are a student laboring over tedious reading material, you could think that studying now will likely help you pass your exams and achieve your academic goals. In the words of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, “No mud, no lotus.”

2. Regulate your emotions.

There are many ways that people can regulate their emotional states to keep themselves in good mood—even despite being in the middle of an otherwise unenjoyable task. For example, thinking of something that makes you happy—whether a memory of a sunny beach or your pet’s joyful greeting when you come home. As Hennecke notes, regulating your emotions can be conceptually different from distraction, because distraction doesn’t necessarily have the component of changing your mood for the better. When you think of your grocery list and dinner plans while you are pushing through on the treadmill, you may have successfully distracted yourself from the here and now of your circumstances, but not necessarily made yourself happier with your thoughts.

CC0/Unsplash

3. Monitor your goal progress.

This strategy involves checking in with yourself and your progress in order to see how well you are doing on your task and how close you are to your goal. For example, if you are on a treadmill, you can monitor your progress by looking at the amount of time or distance that you have already put in. We do this mental evaluation of where we are compared with where we want to be often and naturally, and according to research, it can be a successful self-regulatory strategy to help us persevere at our tasks.

4. Think of the near finish .

When you are getting close to completing your goal but feel the strain and effort of continuing, thinking of the near finish might be another helpful strategy for reaching your goal, says Hennecke. For example, if you had planned on running for 30 minutes, and you feel like you are about to give up after 25 minutes, thinking that you are nearly there can give you the extra boost of self-control you need to push through the last 5 minutes.

Honorary mention: Add a positive activity to the task to make it more pleasant.

If you have ever relied on music or podcasts to get you through cleaning your kitchen, then you must have used what Hennecke calls a task enrichment strategy. Surprisingly, however, this widely-used strategy—adding something positive to the task to make it more pleasant—didn’t have any effect on self-regulatory success in the present study.

According to Hennecke, this might have to do with the participants of her experiment (mostly students) and the task that they frequently had to perform (studying or listening to lectures). Thus, while task enrichment might indeed help you persist at your task, it might become a negative distraction if the task itself is only meaningful if you are able to focus on it.

what is the meaning of difficult task

For example, if you are trying to understand or memorize material that you are reading, then having the TV in the background would likely not be helpful in getting the most out of your reading, suggests Hennecke. This is because it will either add to your cognitive load or distract you from focusing on what you are doing. Thus, task enrichment is a strategy that can be useful in situations where the cognitive load of your task is relatively low and the effort is more physical than mental (for example, house chores or running on a treadmill).

CC0/Unsplash

While there are many other strategies that may be helpful—depending on your personality, the task that you are trying to undertake, your goals and motivations—Hennecke offers important insights into the underlying psychological mechanisms of these self-control strategies that help us persist at everyday aversive tasks:

“On one hand, what gets people to want to finish their goals is their ability to look into the future, to transcend the here and now , and to anticipate what is going to happen depending on their own behavior. These strategies are a means of making sure that you can anticipate the positive consequences that you imagined for your future and to avoid the negative ones. On another hand, these strategies can make the difficult task that you are doing less effortful. In other words, they change the experience of the here and now and make it easier for you to arrive at the future you are trying to accomplish.”

Many thanks to Professor Marie Hennecke for her time and insights. Dr. Hennecke is Professor of Psychology at the University of Siegen, Germany.

What is carbon neutrality and how can it be achieved by 2050?

With the European Climate Law, the EU is committing to carbon neutrality by 2050. What does that mean in practice?

A photo of a forest, a natural carbon sink

Climate change is already affecting the entire world , with extreme weather conditions such as drought, heat waves, heavy rain, floods and landslides becoming more frequent, including in Europe. Other consequences of the rapidly changing climate include rising sea levels, ocean acidification and loss of biodiversity.

In order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius – a threshold the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) suggests is safe – carbon neutrality by mid-21st century is essential. This target is also laid down in the Paris agreement signed by 195 countries, including the EU.

In December 2019, the European Commission presented the European Green Deal , its flagship plan that aims to make Europe climate neutral by 2050. This target will be reached through the European Climate Law that sets climate neutrality into binding EU legislation.

In order to achieve the long-term temperature goal [...], Parties aim to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible, [...], and to undertake rapid reductions thereafter in accordance with the best available science, so as to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century[...].

Carbon Neutrality. Photo by Sebastian Pichler on Unsplash

What is carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in carbon sinks . Removing carbon oxide from the atmosphere and then storing it is known as carbon sequestration. In order to achieve net zero emissions, all worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will have to be counterbalanced by carbon sequestration.

Carbon sink is any system that absorbs more carbon than it emits. The main natural carbon sinks are soil, forests and oceans. According to estimates, natural sinks remove between 9.5 and 11 gigatonne of CO2 per year . Annual global CO2 emissions reached 37.8 gigatonne in 2021 .

Check out how the EU wants to better use forests as carbon sinks

To date, no artificial carbon sinks are able to remove carbon from the atmosphere on the necessary scale to fight global warming.

The carbon stored in natural sinks such as forests is released into the atmosphere through forest fires, changes in land use or logging. This is why it is essential to reduce carbon emissions in order to reach climate neutrality.

Carbon offsetting

Another way to reduce emissions and to pursue carbon neutrality is to offset emissions made in one sector by reducing them somewhere else. This can be done through investment in renewable energy , energy efficiency or other clean, low-carbon technologies. The EU’s emissions trading system (ETS) is an example of a carbon offsetting system.

Another example of an initiative to reduce emissions is the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism , which would apply carbon prices on imported goods from less climate ambitious countries. This should help discourage companies moving production from the EU to somewhere with less stringent greenhouse gas emissions rules.

what is the meaning of difficult task

The European Union is committed to an ambitious climate policy. Under the Green Deal it aims to become the first continent to remove as many CO2 emissions as it produces by 2050. This goal became legally binding when the European Parliament and Council adopted the Climate Law in 2021 . The EU’s interim emission reduction target for 2030 was also updated from 40% to at least 55%.

The EU is currently revising old legislation and setting new laws that will help deliver the 2030 goal of a 55% cut in emissions. The package of legislation is known as Fit for 55 and includes among others rules on emissions trading, national emissions reduction targets, carbon removal in the land use sector and transport emissions.

Kamala Harris Faces Difficult Task of Reassuring US Allies After Trump’s Impact on NATO

V ice President Kamala Harris faces a challenging task on Friday as she seeks to reassure US allies amid ongoing global conflicts and domestic political turmoil.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Harris will address key issues like aid for Ukraine and Israel, while also confronting concerns raised by former President Donald Trump’s recent statements.

Trump’s remarks over the weekend, where he suggested that Russia could do “whatever the hell they want” to NATO members who don’t meet defense spending guidelines, have sparked worry among US allies.

There are fears that if Trump were to be reelected, he might not uphold NATO’s collective-defense clause, which is crucial for the alliance’s strength and stability.

Kamala Harris (Credits: The Japan Times)

Meanwhile, the White House has been struggling to pass a national security supplemental request in Congress, which includes funding for Ukraine and Israel, among other priorities. The delay in passing this aid package has raised concerns about the US’s ability to support Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Against this backdrop, Harris is expected to emphasize the dangers of isolationism, authoritarianism, and unilateralism in foreign policy, contrasting sharply with Trump’s approach.

She will argue that such ideologies weaken America and could lead to global disorder, harming both the American people and the world.

President Joe Biden has also criticized Trump’s foreign policy stance, accusing him of “bowing down” to Vladimir Putin and sending a “dangerous and shocking” signal with his comments. Biden has reaffirmed America’s commitment to its allies, emphasizing that when America makes a commitment, it keeps it.

The White House has underscored the urgency of providing additional funds to Ukraine, framing it as a matter of national security.

Harris is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, underscoring the administration’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

In his remarks, Biden has sought to reassure allies of America’s commitment to NATO and its allies, stating that NATO is a “sacred commitment” and not a burden, as Trump had suggested. Biden has vowed to uphold US values and commitments, contrasting sharply with Trump’s approach to foreign policy.

Overall, Harris’s speech at the Munich Security Conference will be closely watched as a signal of America’s foreign policy direction under the Biden administration, particularly in light of ongoing global challenges and the specter of Trump’s potential return to office.

Ukraine’s defense minister says delays in promised Western military aid are costing lives

The Associated Press

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Half of promised Western military support to Ukraine fails to arrive on time, complicating the task of military planners and ultimately costing the lives of soldiers, the country’s defense minister said Sunday.

Speaking at the “Ukraine. Year 2024” forum in Kyiv, Rustan Umerov said that each delayed aid shipment meant Ukrainian troop losses, and underscored Russia’s superior military might.

Commemorations to mark the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Saturday brought expressions of continued support, new bilateral security agreements and fresh aid commitments from Ukraine’s Western allies. But Umerov said they still needed to deliver on their commitments if Ukraine is to have any chance of holding out against Russia.

“We look to the enemy: their economy is almost 2 trillion dollars, they use up to 15% official and non-official budget (funds) for the war, which constitutes over $100 billion dollars annually. So basically whenever a commitment doesn’t come on time, we lose people, we lose territory,” he said.

Umerov and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi toured front-line combat posts earlier Sunday amid a worsening ammunition shortage and dogged Russian attacks in the east.

They heard from front-line troops and “thoroughly analyzed” the battlefield situation on their visit, Syrskyi said in a Telegram update. He did not specify where exactly he and Umerov went, but said that “the situation is difficult” for Ukrainian troops and “needs constant control” along many stretches of the front.

Ukraine has suffered setbacks on the battlefield, having lost the strategic eastern city of Avdiivka following intense battles this month, and as military aid for Kyiv hangs in the balance in the U.S. Congress.

Syrskyi earlier this month replaced Ukraine’s top military commander, Valerii Zaluzhny, in the most significant shakeup of the top brass since the start of the full-scale war, after a long-expected counteroffensive last summer failed to produce major breakthroughs. Russia still controls roughly a quarter of the country.

Russian shelling and rocket strikes on Sunday continued to pummel Ukraine’s south and east, as local Ukrainian officials reported that at least two civilians were killed and a further eight suffered wounds in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces.

A woman was wounded and a railway station turned into a smoldering ruin amid heavy shelling in the eastern city of Kostiantynivka, according to the head of the municipal military administration. Ukraine’s public broadcaster, Suspilne, cited local police as saying that the strikes also damaged an Orthodox church, over a dozen residential buildings and dozens of shops, a post office, schools and local government offices.

Russia and Ukraine also continued to trade nightly drone attacks, with Ukraine’s air defenses shooting down 16 of 18 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched overnight by Moscow. A Russian drone on Sunday morning struck an unspecified facility in Ukraine’s western Khmelnytskyi region, the regional military administration reported without giving details.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry on Sunday morning reported it had downed seven Ukrainian drones — four over the Black Sea and three over Russia’s southern Belgorod region. It did not immediately mention any casualties or damage.
