How to Change the IP Address on Your Android

Tired of a random Android IP? Here's how you can make your IP static

how to manually set ip address on android phone

  • University of Maine
  • Switching from iOS

What to Know

  • In Windows search bar , enter cmd . In Command Prompt , enter ipconfig/all . Mac: cmd + space  > terminal. Ping for IP address.
  • On Android: Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi . Press connected Wi-Fi > Modify network > Advanced options > Static .
  • Configure network settings with Gateway IP and DNS address found in Command Prompt , and with IP address found during Ping .

This article explains how to switch your Android (9.0 and up) to a static IP address on your network. The directions below should apply in general, no matter who made your Android device: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

Find a Network IP for Your Android

Before you can set up your Android with a static IP, you'll need to find an available IP address on your network. You can do this from any computer that's connected to your home network.

On a Windows PC:

Click the Start menu .

Type cmd and click on the Command Prompt desktop app .

In the command prompt window, type the command ipconfig/all and press Enter .

What Your Results Mean

You'll see lots of information in the results, but you only need to be concerned with a few items.

  • Default Gateway : This is the IP address of your home router and is typically the lowest IP address on the network. In the example above, this IP address is 10.0.0.1.
  • IPv4 Address : This is the IP address of the device from which you've run the command. In the example above, this IP address is 10.0.0.158.
  • DNS Servers : These are the servers your internet service provider (ISP) uses to look up domain names when you browse the internet.

Find a Free IP Address

You can find a free IP address on your network by typing a ping command starting from the router IP and working your way up.

If you see a response with ping time, it means there's a device on the network with that IP address. If the response reads " Destination host unreachable ," it means that IP address is available.

To perform the same ipconfig and ping commands on a Mac, open the terminal by pressing cmd + space and typing "terminal". In the Mac terminal, you can issue the same commands as described above.

Change the IP Address on Your Android

Now that you know what IP you can set your phone to, it's time to switch your phone from DHCP to a static IP.

Open Settings , under Network & internet, tap on Wi-Fi .

Press and hold on the connected Wi-Fi network. You'll see a menu pop-up. Tap Modify network .

Depending on your device's Android implementation, you may have to "Forget" the connected network before the press-and-hold trick will work. As an added step moving forward, re-enter the network password alongside the IP address changes.

You'll see the password change screen for that network. Tap Advanced options , and scroll down to the IP settings section. Tap DHCP and change the setting to Static .

Manually Configure Your Android's Network Settings

Once you've changed the IP Setting to Static, a form will appear that will allow you to manually configure all of your Android's network settings , including your Android's IP.

Since your IP will be static, you'll need to manually configure the rest of the network settings in this form as well.

  • IP Address : The available IP address you discovered using the Ping command.
  • Gateway : Enter the default Gateway IP address you recorded above.
  • DNS 1 and DNS 2 : Type the IP addresses of the DNS servers you recorded above.

You can leave any other fields in this form set as default. When you're done changing the IP settings, tap Save .

Your Android will reconnect to your home network with its new IP. Now you can configure any software you're using to connect to your Android using its new, static IP address.

Your Android phone will retain this static IP even after a reboot. If you want to undo the static IP and set your Android back to DHCP, just follow the steps above, but in the Advanced Options menu, set the IP Settings option back to DHCP.

Why Change the IP Address on Your Android?

Changing your IP address on your Android is simple. There is a buried setting in your Android device that lets you switch from a dynamic IP (DHCP) to a static one.

However, there are several things you should do beforehand to make sure that you're choosing an available static IP address on your network.

There are plenty of important reasons you may need to set a static IP on your phone that doesn't change.

A few of the most common reasons include:

  • Running a mobile web server
  • Sharing mobile files with FTP server software
  • Using your phone as a Wi-Fi camera
  • Running a mobile media server on your phone

All of these uses require your mobile phone to have a fixed IP that you can easily configure in 3rd party software running on your computer or any other device on your network.

If you're looking to find a way to set a static IP address on your Android device, Jack Wallen walks you through the process of doing just that.

There may be times, when you’re connected to a wireless network, that you need to set a static IP address. Why? Say, for instance, you want to use a different set of DNS servers than the default. Or maybe you need to specify a proxy address for a network that isn’t picked out by default. In order to this, you must set that wireless network up as static. To accomplish this, you have to make use of the static address feature found in Android. Let me show you how.

I’ll be demonstrating this on Android 7, otherwise known as Nougat. If you’re not running Nougat, fret not, the feature works on many older iterations of of the platform.

The first thing to do is open up the Network settings. Once there, long-press the network in question and tap Modify network. Next, tap the Advanced options drop-down, tap the IP settings drop-down, and tap Static. In the new window you are able to configure a proxy, an IP address, a gateway address, network prefix length, and two DNS servers. Once you’ve completed the setup, tap SAVE and your static IP address is good to go. The networking system will automatically reconnect to the network, using the newly configured information. You’re good to go. Every time you come back to that particular wireless network, it will connect with that static address.

How to change the IP address of an Android phone or device

IP address

On the Internet, your IP address is similar to a postal address. It uniquely identifies where you are so that information can be sent to you. Your IP address can change depending on what network you're using to connect. You can also change it, within certain limitations, if desired.

To change your IP address on an Android device, follow these instructions.

  • The basics.
  • Change the local IP address of your Android device.
  • Change the public IP address of your Android device.
  • Change your device's IP address on a mobile network.

Before reading any of the below information, you need to be aware of some network basics.

  • Realize there are two types of IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Know the difference between a static IP address and a dynamic IP address . See each link for additional information about these terms.
  • When on the Internet , it's up to your ISP (Internet service provider) to assign and give you your network address seen by the Internet. When on a LAN (local area network) or WAN (wide area network), the home or corporate router assigns the IP addresses.
  • If you're planning on designating or using a static IP address, be aware of how IP address ranges are handled and be familiar with the netmask . See each of these links for additional information.

Change the local IP address of your Android device

Your local IP address is tied to your computer's wireless network . By default, a home router uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to assign an IP address to each device that connects to your network. Each IP address assigned by your router uses NAT (Network Address Translation) to translate the internal network IP to the ISP assigned IP address.

You can change your Android local IP address by connecting your router and adjusting the router settings for your Android device. For example, you can assign a static IP to your Android device, choose the option to re-assign the address, or remove the device and be assigned a new address.

  • How to adjust the settings of a home router.

Some routers may re-assign your Android device a new IP address if rebooted. If you don't want to adjust your router settings, try unplugging the power to the router for a few minutes and then plug the power back into the router.

These steps only change the IP address of your Android device on your local network. Steps for changing your public IP address (external to your local network) are mentioned below.

Change the public IP address of your Android device

Before proceeding, it's good to know your device's public IP to verify its changes. You can do this by doing a Google search on "What's my IP address?" The result is your public IP.

To change the public IP address requires that the IP address assigned by your ISP changes. Although not always possible, suggestions on how to change your routers public IP address in the link below. If these steps do not help, you can hide your IP address behind a VPN by following the steps in the following section.

  • How do I change my IP address?

Hide your public IP address behind a VPN

A VPN (virtual private network) allows any device including an Android device to hide behind one of the VPN's IP address. In other words, connecting to a website or anything on the Internet, your IP is the VPN IP address and not your public IP address. To install a VPN on your Android device, follow the steps below.

  • Visit the Google Play Store and download the free app called PureVPN.
  • After you install the app, open it , and sign up for an account .

You can use your Facebook or Google account to sign into PureVPN.

  • Once you've verified your account, open PureVPN and click the green Quick connect button in the center of the screen.

Quick connect button in PureVPN.

  • Once you've connected, your public IP address is changed.

To change your public IP address again, disconnect and reconnect to PureVPN.

Change your device's IP address on a mobile network

There is no need to change your devices IP address on a mobile network because mobile networks use DHCP to assign IP addresses, so they change frequently as is. However, if you're also concerned about assigned mobile network IP addresses, choose to connect to the Internet using a VPN app, as mentioned in the above suggestions.

How to change your IP address

You can think of an IP address like a postal address, just for locations on the internet and your home network — it’s how you’re identified, which lets devices know where to route data packets. Your internet IP is specifically known as a “public” address, whereas devices on your home network have “local” or “private” IPs so they can talk to each other.

There’s usually no need to change an IP address, whether public or local. But if the need arises, here’s how you can change addresses on Android, iPhone, Mac, and Windows devices.

QUICK ANSWER

Public IPs can be changed in several ways, such as a VPN, the Tor network, or (in some cases) rebooting your modem. You can also change the local IPs of devices on your network, the exact methods depending on the device in question.

JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

How to change your public IP address on Windows or Mac

How to change your ip address on android, how to change your ip address on an iphone, how to change your local ip address on windows, how to change your local ip address on a mac, why change your ip.

NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem CM1200

There are a few ways to change your public IP, some more reliable than others.

  • Reboot your modem by unplugging it, waiting a few minutes, then plugging it back in. Ideally this should release your IP and secure you a new one when you reconnect. There’s no guarantee however — not every ISP (internet service provider) uses dynamic IP assignment, and you may just get your old IP back, regardless. If you’re determined to use this method, you may want to wait a few hours before reconnecting to improve your chances.
  • Request a new IP from your ISP. You’ll have to research how your ISP handles those requests, and if it uses dynamic IPs, a new IP might not stick forever. Some ISPs offer the option of a static (permanent) IP, but you may have to pay for the privilege.
  • Connect to a VPN (virtual private network) . VPNs offer middleman servers that not only disguise your real IP, but  improve security and let you get around geoblocking by businesses and governments. Most VPNs require a subscription fee however, and in a sense, your personal IP never really changes — it’s just that outside parties can’t see it unless they bypass the VPN’s security.
  • Connect to an HTTP/S, SOCKS, or SSH proxy . Much like a VPN, a proxy forwards traffic through a separate server, and it’s that server that the internet sees as your public IP. This is can be an extremely technical option, and if you use HTTP/S, only your web browser will gain the benefits.
  • Connect to the Tor network , which is free and run by volunteers. This option is limited to web traffic, and funnels your data through multiple servers, each of which adds a layer of security. You can think of it as a bulletproof VPN, and for that reason it’s a favorite of both political dissidents and criminals. It’s best avoided by casual users, not just because of that focus on the web but because it slows speeds considerably.

Google Pixel 7 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra cameras close up

For your public IP in Android, you’ll need to use indirect options like a VPN, but you do have direct control over your device’s local IP. Note that instructions may vary since there are different forks of Android, but here’s a sample flow:

  • Open Settings and navigate to Network and Internet .
  • Find your currently connected Wi-Fi network, then tap and hold on its name.
  • Choose Modify Network .
  • Tap Advanced Options  and select a static IP .
  • You should be prompted to enter a main IP address, a gateway address, and one or more DNS servers.

Be aware that you can’t enter whatever numbers you like in these fields and expect them to work. For your main address, you’ll need to ping IPs on your local network and discover an open one, and you really shouldn’t change gateway or DNS addresses. You’ll want to poll your Wi-Fi network to discover what your existing gateway and DNS addresses are, say by using the ipconfig/all command in the Windows Command Prompt. The ping command can also be used there, starting from one digit higher than your gateway. Macs have an equivalent to the Command Prompt called Terminal.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro Max cameras

As with Android, you have to change an iPhone or iPad’s public IP through tools like VPNs, but there are built-in options for changing local IP.

  • Open the Settings app and select Wi-Fi .
  • Hit the info (i) button next to your currently active network.
  • Scroll down to the IPv4 Address section and tap Configure IP .
  • Select Manual , and enter the new address data. You’ll need to use the network discovery instructions in the Android section above to figure out which info to use.

There are actually a few ways to do this, but the easiest is through the Settings app. In Windows 11:

  • Open Settings, then click on Network and internet .
  • Click Wi-Fi.
  • Select your active Wi-Fi network.
  • Next to IP assignment , click Edit .
  • Choose Manual and toggle on IPv4 .
  • As needed, specify your main IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and preferred DNS. As explained in our Android instructions, you’ll want to use network discovery tools to learn which IPs to use.

WWDC 2022 macOS Ventura Stage Manager

Using macOS Ventura:

  • Click the Apple menu, then System Settings .
  • Click Network in the sidebar.
  • Select the Wi-Fi connection you’re using, then Details .
  • Click TCP/IP .
  • Click Configure IPv4 and choose Manually .
  • Enter IP address data as needed. You’ll need to use Terminal commands to learn which IP addresses are open on your network.

There are a few reasons. Using Tor, a VPN, or a proxy can mask your digital identity, mitigating threats like hackers, ad tracking, or government surveillance. And as mentioned, those options can also be a way around geoblocking by both governments and corporations — Netflix for example limits catalog access based on the country your public IP belongs to.

You might also change your public IP to visit previously restricted websites, say if an authoritarian government doesn’t want you to learn about past or ongoing atrocities.

Otherwise, the only common reason to change IPs is as a troubleshooting step. Mostly this applies when once device is trying to connect to another and failing. Try other steps first, if they’re available, since you could potentially break a connection without solving the real problem.

A standard IP address is a string of four numbers separated by periods, each ranging in value from 0 to 255. Your router, for instance, will typically have an address like 192.168.x.1, where the X will be a single-digit value.

Internet Protocol. It’s fundamental to how the internet works, to the point that that the IPv4 system has been around since the early 1980s, long before the public had access. The internet is slowly migrating towards IPv6.

Fact-Checked this

As you may already know, a device’s Internet Protocol (IP) address — whether dynamic or static — is its assigned 32-bit numerical label that can identify its host or network interface and location. You may want to change your IP address or switch it from dynamic to static; we’ll discuss these later.

For now, let’s get into what you really came here for. You’ll be happy to know that, with this straightforward guide, changing your IP address on an Android should be a cinch. You have two options to go about it:

  • By using a reliable VPN
  • By changing network and internet settings

I’ll walk you through each one…

I provide two options for doing so: using a reliable VPN or changing network and internet settings.

I walk you through each option and provide step-by-step instructions for changing your IP address using a VPN and for changing your device’s network and internet settings.

I also discuss the benefits of using a VPN to change your IP address and the reasons why someone might want to change their IP address.

Using a Reliable VPN

A VPN can protect your internet traffic and your privacy. You can change your IP address to another one to conceal your IP. This is the most secure way to be anonymous on the internet.

1. First, you’ll need to sign up for a reliable and good VPN , such as ExpressVPN , NordVPN, SurfShark, or PureVPN.

ExrpessVPN homepage

2. Visit the Google Play Store and download the relevant apps for your Android mobile.

ExpressVPN Mobile

3. Install the app, open it, and enter your login credentials.

ExpressVPN Login

4. To connect, select the location or server of your choice. Sometimes called the “Smart Location”, whatever is recommended is generally best.

ExpressVPN UK Server

Your IP address will change, and no one will know your device’s IP. This is the best-proven way to stay anonymous online.

Changing Your Device’s Network and Internet Settings

These settings apply to any device with the Android operating system installed, be it Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi, Google, or others. Making changes to the settings is easy.

1. Choose an Available Static IP Address

Before you change your IP address, several things must be done. One is choosing an available static IP address on your local network. This could be done with any computer connected to the local network.

If you have a Windows machine, do the following:

  • Type cmd on your Start Menu and click on the Command Prompt desktop application.
  • Enter ipconfig/all in the command prompt window and press Enter.

Change Your Android IP Address

  • Check the Default Gateway, DNS Servers, and IPV4 Address details in the command prompt output. Let me briefly introduce what they are and why they’re important for the next step.

Default Gateway

The default gateway is another IP address that the traffic you send from your device gets to when its final destination is outside the current local network.

This is the local network’s router’s private IP address. So, all the devices connected to this network send traffic to this IP address by default.

IPv4 Address

This address is the device you’re currently active on or from which you enter the above commands.

DNS Servers

DNS stands for Domain Name System. Many services operated on the internet or your local area networks, such as Mail servers and web servers, use DNS and are very important. ISPs use DNS server caching to minimize the traffic and avoid bottlenecks.

  • Now, to find an available IP address on your local area network, use the ping command on different IP addresses shown in the network. I suggest you start from the router IP or the Default Gateway IP address and keep the process going until you find a free IP address.

This is how to use the ping command:

Ping IP Address

  • How can you determine if it’s available? Simple. If the ping command gives you an output with a response time, an active device on the network is already assigned with the particular IP address. However, if you receive a response that says, “Destination host unreachable,” it’s available and is a possible candidate for your static IP address.

2. Change the IP address on Your Android Mobile Phone

You’ve probably decided what IP address to choose as your static IP address. Now let’s get on with the actual switching.

  • Go to your device Settings.

Android Advanced Settings

  • Head over to the Network & Internet section.

Android Network and Internet Settings

  • Tap on Wi-Fi , where you’ll see all the available connections and the one you’re connected to.

Android WiFi Settings

  • Press and hold the Wi-Fi network your device is already connected to.
  • There, tap on Modify network .

Android Modify Network

  • Tap on Advanced options .

Android Advanced Options

  • Find the IP Settings section. You may have to scroll down.
  • By default, your IP Settings must be set to DHCP. Tap on it and change it to “Static.”

Android IP Settings

  • Fill out the form and configure the network settings manually.

Android Network Settings

Remember the three critical addresses we discussed? You’ll have to fill out all those details when manually configuring. Here’s where you can use them.

  • For the IP address field, enter the free IP address you found earlier in Step 1.
  • Then enter the default gateway address (the router’s IP address).
  • Enter the DNS Server addresses you found in Step 1.
  • Leave the other fields as default and then save.

That’s it. All done!

Once completed all these steps, your device will reconnect to the home network with the new IP address.

As I mentioned, people want to change their IP address for numerous reasons. If you’ve read this far into the article, I bet one or more of the following reasons apply to you:

  • To share mobile files with FTP server software
  • To use your mobile phone as a Wi-Fi camera
  • To access specific online content (e.g., Netflix, government-restricted sites) when you’re in a geo-blocked location.
  • To run a mobile web server
  • To run a mobile media server on your mobile phone
  • To boost your speed because you’re on a network that’s providing controlled bandwidths for different IPs
  • To avoid being the victim of cyberattacks
  • To exercise freedom of speech in a place where it might otherwise be restricted

Fortunately, nothing should hold you back from doing any of that because now you know how to change your IP address and get a static IP instead of a dynamic IP. And as you’ve seen, this is easy to set up.

Please put your comments and suggestions in the comment section, and ask away if you have any questions!

Surfshark works nicely on my Android phone, haven’t had any issues with connectivity. They also have pretty dope features in addition to the VPN service itself.

Easy Ways to Change Your IP Address

Your IP address is how the internet — and anyone who tracks you — identifies you. You can’t go online without an IP address, but it can be unsettling to think you’re being watched. Learn how to change your IP address on a phone or computer. Or, get a VPN to change your IP address automatically and encrypt your connection while you browse.

How to change your IP address automatically

You can change your device’s IP address automatically by connecting to a VPN or a proxy server. Your device’s IP address will change, but the IP address for any other devices on your network won’t. Changing your device’s IP address through a VPN or proxy doesn’t affect your router settings either.

Don’t worry about what happens if you change your IP address. An IP is like the address to your house — it’s just a number that lets others know where you are. Changing your IP address is like changing the number on your mailbox: you'll confuse strangers, but your friends will still know how to reach you.

Change your IP address with a VPN

Changing your IP address with a VPN is one of the easiest ways to keep online trackers off your trail. Here’s how to do it:

Install a reliable VPN like AVG Secure VPN .

Open the app and toggle on the VPN. Your device’s IP address will change and you’ll be connected to the fastest server location available.

AVG Secure VPN connected to its optimal server location to change an Android's IP address.

Here are some pros and cons to consider when changing your IP address with a VPN:

Pros to using a VPN:

Lets you browse anonymously.

Secures traffic data to and from your device.

Helps you bypass geo-blocked websites and access content.

Encrypts your internet connection.

Prevents internet throttling from your ISP.

Cons to using a VPN:

Slows your normal internet connection speeds.

Some websites don’t allow access with a VPN.

If the VPN is untrustworthy, it may collect your data.

A quality VPN allows you to change your IP address location to almost anywhere in the world, and it will find the best server location possible. However, a VPN connection might be a bit slower than your usual internet connection, because the traffic coming in and out has an extra layer of protection to get through.

You can change your IP address by using a VPN on Windows and Android, and you can set up a VPN on Mac and iOS devices just as easily.

Change your IP address with a proxy server

While a VPN is like changing your house number, a proxy server is like setting up a safehouse to communicate on your behalf. The website server sends information to your safehouse (the proxy server) instead of to your device directly. The safehouse then forwards the information to your real address.

Pros to connecting via proxy:

Unlocks geo-blocked content or sites blocked at work or school.

No installation necessary.

Strengthens the security of your network connection.

Cons to connecting via proxy:

Doesn’t encrypt your connection.

Crowded proxy servers can cause slow internet speeds.

Some untrustworthy proxies can reroute you to unsafe websites or collect your data.

After you get comfortable setting up a proxy or using a VPN to change your IP address, you can experiment with different configurations and uses, such as using a Smart DNS proxy server vs a VPN .

How to change your IP address manually

Learning how to change an IP address manually allows you to make permanent changes to your device’s virtual location. Or you can change between a static IP address — which is great for remote workers or gamers that use Zoom or other VoIP services — and a dynamic IP address that keeps hackers guessing.

Changing your IP manually can be tricky. But if you decide to change your IP address on your own, it’s best to choose an IP address between these ranges:

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

You’ll also want to avoid IP addresses outside the range of your current network. And don’t change your IP address to numbers that end with .0 or .255. These are usually reserved for TCP/IP protocols . Numbers commonly used by a router or other network device, such as 10.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.0.100 are easy targets for dangerous hackers .

Other ways to change your IP address

Other ways to change your IP address include using the Tor Browser or resetting your internet router. Both are legal, though many ISPs take notice if you use Tor regularly due to its connection to dark web marketplaces. Resetting your router is as simple as unplugging it and plugging it back in again.

Use Tor to change your IP

Tor encrypts your IP address and internet traffic to hide the data you send and receive. Your identity is hidden by bouncing the data packets you send around many different Tor servers. Here are some pros and cons of using Tor Browser.

Pros to using Tor Browser:

Hides your IP address and real location.

Blocks online tracking.

Allows you to access the dark web.

Tor is maintained in a decentralized structure, so no one controls the browser’s data.

Browser patches are often released quickly due to its open-source nature.

Cons to using Tor Browser:

Attracts a shady user base.

Significantly decreases internet connection speeds.

Is rife with unsecured websites.

Is vulnerable to packet sniffers.

Regardless of Tor Browser’s association with the dark web’s illicit sites, check out the differences between a VPN, a proxy, and Tor and experiment with how to change your IP address in a way that works best for you.

Reset your router to change your IP

You can change your IP address by simply unplugging your router, waiting a few minutes, then plugging the router back in. You may have to repeat the steps multiple times before you get lucky and obtain a new IP address from your ISP. This will change the external IP address for all devices connected to the network.

You can also change a router’s IP address manually by logging into it. Check the list of default router information for more about manually changing the external IP address of your router — default IP addresses and login information differ depending on the router manufacturer.

Here are the general steps for how to manually set your IP address on a router:

Enter your router's IP address into your browser.

Log in with the default username and password.

Choose Network Settings , Administrator Settings , or a similar option.

Go to the Router Settings and type in the router's new IP address.

Save and exit.

Pros to resetting your router:

May improve internet connection speeds.

Reloads the router’s OS and clears the memory.

Can help prevent ISP throttling.

Cons to resetting your router:

Rebooting your router may not change your IP address.

Can disrupt the internet connection of other devices connected to your network.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a string of numbers that uniquely identifies any device or network connected to the internet. IP addresses are how internet traffic is accurately routed, and how computers recognize each other to send and receive information.

IP addresses can also be categorized into public vs private IP addresses — which refer to the IP addresses that communicate with the larger internet vs those that talk only within your local network, respectively — as well as IPv4 vs. IPv6 . Knowing how to change IPv4 to IPv6 can also make your internet communications much more efficient.

On a PC or Mac, you can find your current IP by Googling “What’s my IP address.” On an Android or other mobile device, open your Wi-Fi settings to check your IP address. And, for anyone keeping tabs on you, it’s almost as simple. That’s why learning how to hide your IP address will help strengthen your online privacy.

Why change your IP address?

Changing your IP address makes it harder for cybercriminals to find and track you, and it helps you unblock certain websites and streaming services. Changing your IP address is also a good way to bypass ISP throttling if you suspect your internet is being slowed down on purpose.

If you can find your IP address , then hackers, scammers, and social media companies likely know how to get your IP address too. And even though your IP address can change with your location, as you move around it becomes easier to learn your device’s whereabouts. And while at home, your IP doesn’t change, so with a little detective work cybercriminals can quickly figure out which IP addresses are home addresses.

Our private browsing guide can show you a few steps toward total browsing freedom. But if private browsing and online privacy are important to you, changing your IP address will be a game changer.

What Is an IP Address?

This is an identification number given to a device when it connects to the internet with a 32-bit numeric format. This identification is distributed throughout a network, enabling communication between attached devices.

The friendly website addresses that we can remember are linked to IP addresses. IPv4 is the most commonly used IP format globally. However, IPv6 will likely overtake IPv4 as the de facto standard shortly. Operating on a 128-bit numbering scheme is IPv6.

Can VPN Change Phone IP Address?

There are 1.5 billion VPNs worldwide; by 2027, the VPN market is projected to hit a margin of $87.1 billion. However, these premium VPNs cost an arm and a leg, and it’s essential to use one that guarantees the best features , such as changing your phone’s IP address without breaking the bank.

Cutting to the chase, you can easily change your phone’s IP address with iProVPN. Your online ID undergoes a complete makeover once you connect to their server. Every website you visit believes that it is the server making the requests.

What is an ip address, reasons to change your ip address on your phone, how to change your ip address on an iphone, how to change your ip address on an android phone.

An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, is a unique numeric label assigned to each device that is connected to a computer network using the IP protocol. It serves two primary functions: identifying the host or network interface and providing the location of the device on the network.

An IP address consists of a series of four sets of numbers separated by periods. Each set ranges from 0 to 255, giving a total of over 4 billion possible combinations. The format of an IP address follows the pattern of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where each “xxx” represents a number.

There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 is the older version and is still the most commonly used. It uses a 32-bit address space, allowing for approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. On the other hand, IPv6 is the newer version that uses a 128-bit address space, providing for an incomprehensibly large number of unique addresses.

IP addresses play a critical role in facilitating communication between devices over the internet. They act as the digital equivalent of physical addresses, enabling data packets to be routed to the correct destination across the network.

In addition to their identifying and routing functions, IP addresses can reveal certain details about the device or network, including the approximate geographical location. This information can be useful for various purposes, such as targeted advertising or determining the origin of online threats.

It’s important to note that IP addresses can be dynamic or static. Dynamic IP addresses are assigned by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and change periodically, whereas static IP addresses are manually configured and remain fixed. Static IP addresses are often used for devices that require constant accessibility, such as servers or networked printers.

Overall, IP addresses are an integral part of the internet infrastructure, allowing devices to communicate and share data with each other. Understanding the basics of IP addresses is essential for effectively managing and troubleshooting network connectivity.

Changing your IP address on your phone can provide you with a range of benefits and serve a variety of purposes. Here are some of the main reasons why you might want to consider changing your IP address:

1. Bypassing geo-restrictions: Many websites and online services impose restrictions based on geographic location. By changing your IP address, you can bypass these restrictions and gain access to content that may be blocked in your current region. This is particularly useful if you are traveling and want to access your favorite streaming services or websites.

2. Protecting your online privacy: Your IP address reveals your location and can be used to track your online activities. By changing your IP address, you can maintain your privacy and make it more difficult for websites and services to track your online behavior.

3. Avoiding targeted advertisements: Advertisers often use your IP address to deliver targeted ads based on your location and browsing habits. By changing your IP address, you can avoid being bombarded with ads that are tailored to your personal preferences.

4. Overcoming network restrictions: In some cases, your IP address may be blocked by certain networks or websites due to various reasons. Changing your IP address can help you bypass these restrictions and regain access to the blocked content or services.

5. Enhancing online security: If you suspect that your IP address has been compromised or if you want to add an extra layer of security to your online activities, changing your IP address can help protect your personal information and prevent unauthorized access to your devices and accounts.

6. Troubleshooting connectivity issues: If you’re experiencing connectivity issues on your phone, changing your IP address can be a useful troubleshooting step. It can help you establish a new connection with the network and resolve any issues related to IP conflicts.

Overall, changing your IP address on your phone can offer you greater flexibility, privacy, and access to online content. Whether you want to bypass geo-restrictions, protect your privacy, or troubleshoot connectivity issues, changing your IP address can be a valuable tool in your mobile arsenal.

If you’re looking to change your IP address on your iPhone, you’ve come to the right place. There might be various reasons why you would want to change your IP address – from improving online privacy and security to accessing blocked websites or bypassing location-based restrictions. Whatever the reason may be, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change your IP address on an iPhone.

Step 1: Disconnect from Wi-Fi

First, disconnect from any Wi-Fi network you’re connected to. This is an important step as changing your IP address on an iPhone requires you to be on a cellular network rather than Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Enable Airplane Mode

Next, swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone screen to access the Control Center and tap on the Airplane mode icon. This will disable Wi-Fi and cellular data, ensuring that you’re only connected to your cellular network.

Step 3: Turn off Airplane Mode

After a few seconds, tap on the Airplane mode icon again to turn it off. This will re-enable your cellular data while keeping Wi-Fi turned off.

Step 4: Check your new IP address

To verify that your IP address has changed, you can visit a website like whatismyip.com or use an IP lookup tool. Compare the new IP address with the one you had before, and if it’s different, congratulations – you’ve successfully changed your IP address on your iPhone!

Step 5: Reconnect to Wi-Fi

Once you’ve changed your IP address and no longer need to remain on your cellular network, you can go ahead and reconnect to a Wi-Fi network. Simply go to your iPhone’s settings, select Wi-Fi, and choose the desired network to connect to.

That’s it! By following these simple steps, you can easily change your IP address on an iPhone. Keep in mind that changing your IP address won’t completely anonymize your online activities, but it can help enhance your privacy and bypass certain restrictions. Remember to use this knowledge responsibly and always respect the terms of service of the websites and apps you use.

Changing your IP address on an Android phone can be useful for a variety of reasons. Whether you want to access websites or services that are blocked in your country, improve your online privacy and security, or troubleshoot network connectivity issues, changing your IP address can help. Follow these steps to change your IP address on your Android phone:

  • Use a VPN: The easiest and most effective way to change your IP address on an Android phone is by using a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the internet, effectively masking your IP address. There are many VPN apps available on the Google Play Store, so choose one that suits your needs, install it, and follow the instructions to connect to a VPN server. Once connected, your IP address will be changed.
  • Switch to a different network: Another way to change your IP address on an Android phone is by switching to a different network. This can be done by connecting to a different Wi-Fi network or using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. Each network assigns a unique IP address, so by switching networks, your IP address will be different.
  • Enable airplane mode: If you want a temporary change in your IP address, you can enable airplane mode on your Android phone. This will turn off all network connections, including Wi-Fi and mobile data. After enabling airplane mode, wait for a few seconds and then disable it. Your phone will reconnect to the network with a new IP address.
  • Reset network settings: If you are experiencing persistent network issues and want to completely refresh your IP address, you can reset the network settings on your Android phone. To do this, go to the Settings app, select “System”, then “Reset Options”, and finally “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth”. Keep in mind that resetting network settings will also remove saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices.

Changing your IP address on an Android phone can provide you with more privacy, freedom, and access to different online resources. Whether you choose to use a VPN, switch networks, enable airplane mode, or reset network settings, remember to consider the implications and potential limitations of each method. It’s always a good idea to research and choose the option that best suits your needs and requirements.

Best IP changer app for Android and iPhone

There are various methods to change your phone IP. Whether you want to enhance your online privacy or fix existing problems, the right option will help you get the most out of your device and your new IP address.

One of the best ways to change IP addresses on Android and iPhone is to use a virtual private network or VPN . When you connect to a VPN, the app uses secure tunneling techniques to transfer data to other servers before it reaches your intended destination, meaning your IP address is essentially the same as another IP address on the Internet. The entire process is encrypted, so your data is not at risk when you use a VPN to change your IP.

To protect your data and privacy, it is suggested to use a paid VPN subscription service rather than a free VPN one, as free services often collect data and carry risks. Regardless of which VPN service you choose, make sure to check if they keep IP address logs.

If you want to know how to change your phone IP address without VPN , a proxy is a good alternative. With a proxy, your traffic goes through a server before reaching its destination. The websites you visit see the IP address of the proxy server instead of your real IP address, keeping your real IP private. Proxies are easy to use and inexpensive. They also do not require any software changes on your device after installation.

Note: Note that the ISP is displayed even if the phone's IP changes, meaning that even with a new IP address, your ISP can see it, so you'll never be truly untraceable when you're online.

How to change your ip address.

Need to fix networking issues? Changing your IP address should help.

Quick Links

Why would you want to change your ip address, static vs. dynamic ips: should you get a static address instead, key takeaways.

The simplest way to change your IP address is to power off your router, wait at least 10 seconds, then power it back on. If that doesn't fix your problem, you may want to set a static IP address instead.

Changing your IP address is a simple fix for a number of networking issues. However, there's more than one way to cook that particular egg. So let's go over your options for getting a new IP address, and why you'd choose one over the other.

Your  IP address is a set of numbers that works both as a way to locate you in the real world as well as serves as your digital address. When you connect to the internet, for example, your internet service provider or ISP will assign you an IP that will reveal to the sites you visit where you're connecting from---it's why sites will usually change language when you're accessing them from abroad.

Changing your network IP will make you appear like you're somewhere else, great for circumventing censorship blocks or even changing your Netflix library to that of another country. However, that's not possible without using outside help, so to speak. You'll usually have to use a third-party program to alter your IP that way, and it only works while that program is active.

There are a few ways to temporarily change your IP like this, we discuss them at length in our article on how to hide your IP address . In most cases, your best bet is to use a virtual private network (VPN) to fake your IP and thus make it appear that you're somewhere else. It's pretty cool, and easy to do.

However, it's not just your internet connection that broadcasts an IP address: each device you own also has its own, unique IP. This is so each device can properly communicate with both the network and each other.

If there's a problem with your network's IP or that of a specific device, they may not connect properly or have some other issues. A VPN won't fix these problems, at least not for the long-term; the only way to get rid of these issues is to permanently change your IP address. Luckily, this isn't that hard to do.

The first way to fix any issues is to change your network's IP. This is a lot easier than you may think thanks to something called the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol . DHCP is a protocol---a set of rules that governs how machines "talk" to each other---which can change the IP address associated on the fly, hence "dynamic."

To do so, all you really need to do is turn your router off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again . (Simply resetting usually doesn't work, but it depends very much on the router.) Once the router is fully on and working again, you should have a new IP address.

You can, of course, check to make sure. To do so, before you switch off the router, find your IP address either by asking your favorite search engine what it is or using a tool like IPleak.net . Write down the IP, switch your router on and off, and then check again.

However, the above fix is a short-term one that mainly only works if you have a simple issue, like if your router suddenly starts acting up. If you have permanent networking issues with your devices, you may have to throw out DHCP altogether and instead set up a static IP address, one that doesn't change.

Related: How to Set Static IP Addresses on Your Eero Router

Setting a static IP address will hopefully get rid of any networking issues, or at least narrow down the list of possible causes for why your devices aren't talking to each other. That said, there are a few different ways to tackle this issue.

First off, you could reach out to your ISP and simply ask them to change your IP address. You'll probably have to explain what the issue is and walk through a few steps with them---this really depends on your ISP---but if the tech is worth their salt, they'll take care of it for you.

Manually Set a Static IP Address

However, that may not be necessary: there are plenty of ways you can track down and fix any issues yourself, starting with changing your router's IP to static. We have a full tutorial on how to set a static IP on your router , and this should hopefully change any issues you have on the network level.

That said, it could be your laptop or desktop causing the issues. In that case, you could try setting a static IP on your Windows computer ---or, if you prefer, using the Windows command prompt . Members of Team Penguin can check out this tutorial on how to set a static IP in Ubuntu . It's also worth noting that  iPhones have a built-in function for changing IPs and setting static ones too .

Whichever route you end up taking, with a few minutes of work your networking issues should be a thing of the past.
