A couple of activities for year 2 on expanded noun phrases.
The first simply provides a range of images for children to write expanded noun phrases about.
The second activity gets children to think carefully about nouns, phrases, expanded noun phrases and sentences by building them step by step.

This bright, appealing PDF grammar worksheet is an excellent way to practise and revise using expanded noun phrases in Year 2 .
This primary resource is divided into five sections:
- Understand Add adjectives to sentences to create an expanded noun phrase.
- Challenge Choose 3 people from the pictures provided and describe each in a sentence that includes an expanded noun phrase.
- Test Underline the expanded noun phrases in the example sentences and tick the sentences which include an expanded noun phrase.
- Explain Explain in your own words how to make an expanded noun phrase.
- Apply Imagine that you are at the fair shown in the example picture and write a passage to describe what it is like, adding extra detail by including expanded noun phrases in some of your sentences.
Activities include SATs-style questions and opportunities for creative writing responses, with eye-catching images as prompts.
What is an expanded noun phrase?
An expanded noun phrase is comprised of a noun and additional words help to further describe that noun. Typically, adjectives are added, separated by commas, to describe the noun and create the expanded noun phrase. Additional information can also be added after the noun using a preposition.

National Curriculum Objectives
English Year 2: (2G3.2) Learn how to use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify [for example, the blue butterfly, plain flour, the man in the moon]
Differentiation:
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Varied Fluency) Developing Match the most appropriate expanded noun phrase to the sentences. Using single adjectives. Expected Match the most appropriate expanded noun phrase and pronoun to the sentences. Some use of multiple adjectives. Greater Depth Identify the expanded noun phrases and match them to the sentences from a range of expanded noun phrases and other phrase types. Some use of multiple adjectives.
Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Varied Fluency) Developing Identify which sentence contains an expanded noun phrase from a short paragraph. Limited use of conjunctions to reduce sentence length and using single adjectives. Expected Identify which sentence contains an expanded noun phrase from a short paragraph. Use of multiple adjectives. Greater Depth Identify which sentence contains an expanded noun phrase from a short paragraph. Most sentences contain a noun phrase. The adjectives come after the noun in the expanded noun phrase.
Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Application and Reasoning) Developing Improve sentences by creating expanded noun phrases at the indicated points with the use of an adjective word bank. Expected Improve sentences by creating expanded noun phrases at the indicated points. Children are encouraged to add multiple adjectives at each point. Greater Depth Improve sentences by adding noun phrases and adverbs where it would add interest to the writing. Children are encouraged to use multiple adjectives, or place the adjectives after the noun using the word ‘with’.
