How to Get a Copy of Your Business License

It isn’t uncommon for state agencies or vendors to ask those who are running businesses to supply proof that they have proper licensing. If you’ve lost this documentation, it’s critical that you obtain a duplicate copy. Here are guidelines for how to get a copy of your business license.

When you visit your state’s secretary of state website, it’s possible to obtain a copy of your business license. When you reach the home page of the secretary of state’s site, there should be a section for businesses and online filing records. Depending on the state in which you’re searching, you can enter keywords and the department of the business to search for the business license or permit. Some states will allow you to print a copy of business license directly from their website. Others request that you submit a request to have the license mailed to the business address they have on file.

Visit Your County’s Office

It’s possible for you to obtain a copy of your business license by visiting your county clerk’s office during normal business hours. You likely obtained your business license at this location, so they should have all of your information on file. Make sure you bring a picture identification with you, as well as supporting documentation that may have been necessary to obtain your license to help them verify your identity and ownership of the business.

Some States Only Operate at a Town Level

Visiting the state’s secretary of state website will not work for all states because some work only at a town level when administering business licenses, like Maine for example. Therefore, you’ll have to go directly to the town where you obtained your business license to receive a copy. Be aware that many small towns don’t have websites with databases, so searching and printing online may not be an option. Therefore, make sure you plan accordingly if your business is located far from the town hall or clerk’s office.

Is Your Business License Valid?

When you’re obtaining a copy, it’s a good idea to inquire about renewal business license. Some business licenses are good for the lifetime of the business. However, depending on the type of license, some must be renewed every one or two years. Check to see if your business falls within these guidelines.

Check With Your Attorney or Power of Attorney

If you’ve filed a copy of your NC business license or state of GA business license, for example, with your attorney or power of attorney, check with them to obtain a copy. These individuals are responsible for keeping a list of business licenses for those who hire them or appoint them as the legal representative for their business affairs. Therefore, if you don’t have time to visit a town office or an internet business license search doesn’t produce printable records, this is your next recourse if you have legal representation.

As part of your market research, you’ll also need to perform a competitive analysis. It will give you an idea of who your competition is and how to differentiate your brand. Here’s an example of a competitive analysis we did for a food business.

It is always a good idea to have a marketing plan before launching your business. A potential investor will want to know how you will advertise your business. Therefore, you should create a marketing plan that explains your planned promotion and customer acquisition strategies.

Discuss how you will make a sale. How will you attract customers and maximize their lifetime value? Ensure your marketing and sales forecasts align with your financial forecasts Marketing plans are usually based on the four Ps : product, price, place, and promotion. Breaking it down by marketing channels makes it easier. Discuss how you intend to market your business via blogs, email, social media, and word-of-mouth.
