  • Investment Advice & Management

Whether you're investing for your own future and security, or on behalf of a business, you want to be able to relax in the knowledge that you've made the right choices.

Investment Advice & Management

It's never too early to consider how you're going to finance your retirement. In fact, the sooner you start actively planning for it, the better.

Retirement Planning

Welcome to Howard Financial Services

We are independent financial advisers with expert and in-depth knowledge of the marketplace combined with years of experience in helping both individuals and businesses to get the most out of their finances.

We provide a wide range of services that can be tailored to your own individual financial circumstances or commercial needs including:

  • Financial Planning

Because we're entirely independent, you can be sure that you're getting fair and impartial advice that is best for you and not limited in any way. We are not tied to any specific products or companies, so we can search the entire market on your behalf.

Whether you need ongoing financial advice or simply one-off help for an investment, at Howard Financial Services our goal is to provide you with everything you need to make the right decision. With our help you can plan for the future, secure your family’s finances and maximise the growth potential of your investment portfolios.

Why choose us?

As an independent financial adviser we are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Unlike financial advisers who are tied to one particular product or family of products we have the scope to find you the deals and investments that are right for you, rather than the ones we have to.

What can we do for you?

We can help you build and manage an investment portfolio that makes your money work harder in line with your attitude to investment risk, ensuring all of your money is invested in the most tax efficient way possible.

If you want to plan for your retirement or review existing policies but can’t make sense of the many options available, we can help you make the right choice.

We can also help you plan for the unexpected and protect your assets and the financial security of your family.

Please browse our website for more details on our full range of services, or Contact Us direct to talk a friendly and professional adviser.

Feel free to contact us to discuss your financial requirements.

Telephone: +44 (0)1392 214635 Email: [email protected]

We are proud to have our financial and accounting experts in Devon’s capital city, Exeter, a city of strong economic growth – particularly in the fields of data and technical science. Our Exeter hub allows us to support a thriving selection of cutting edge owner managed businesses, rural clients and food and drink specialists throughout Devon and Cornwall.

Our Exeter history

Recognising the significance of Exeter as an economic powerhouse in the South West, we first set up a base here in 2006. We are now located in smart, modern offices at Leeward House to the east of the city (near to the Met Office, which boasts Europe’s largest supercomputer), with over thirty staff helping ambitious business across the region.

Our community

With the draw of a thriving cultural city combined with the outdoor treats of Dartmoor and and the Jurassic coast, it’s no accident that our Exeter office tends to attract a wide demographic of young ambitious staff who are keen to indulge their personal and professional passions in culture, commerce, food and drink and the great outdoors. The Old Mill team has an active role in the city, and gets involved in many charity events – especially if they involve physical endurance, or mud.

Our Chief Executive Officer Kevin Whitmarsh oversees the strategic running of Old Mill; supported by a senior team from Exeter which includes; Mark Neath who looks after our Owner Managed Businesses across the region, Head of Rural Andrew Vickery and head of compliance and financial planner Duncan Parkes.

A fiduciary financial advisor must put clients’ best interests first. All Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs) are required to be fiduciaries. However, many RIA firms are also licensed as broker-dealers. When acting as brokers, there is no fiduciary duty.

The best way to know if a financial advisor is a fiduciary all of the time is to ask: "Are you a fiduciary in all of your dealings with me?" Also be sure to review the conflicts of interest and disciplinary actions sections above to see what, if any, conflicts of interest and/or disciplinary actions this firm might have.

Is Exeter Financial a good company?

One way to tell if a financial advisor firm is a good company is to see if it has conflicts of interest and/or any disciplinary actions against it (scroll up to see whether this firm does). If you see any such entries in the tables above, that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t hire that company. But it does mean you should ask questions about those entries.

To figure out if a financial advisor firm is a good company for your specific situation, it’s important to ask additional questions — see our article on questions to ask a financial advisor .

Can financial advisors be trusted?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could give you a simple, unequivocal yes to that question? Sadly, the truth is some advisors can't be trusted. Luckily, there are signs that will help you figure out if you're sitting across from a trustworthy financial advisor. At minimum, a trustworthy financial advisor will:

  • Answer your questions in a way you understand.
  • Explain how they get paid in a way that's clear to you.
  • Respond with a simple "yes" when you ask if they're a fiduciary.
  • Talk about their approach to risk — without downplaying your concerns.
  • Invest in products that you understand.

Can I write a review of Exeter Financial or file a complaint?

Investor.com relies on regulatory data from the SEC to rate and review financial advisor firms. As a result, we do not support personal reviews on the site. To file a complaint or dispute with this firm, please fill out the SEC Investor Complaint Form .

I'm a financial planner — I have 4 tips for my business owner clients looking to open a business bank account

Our experts choose the best products and services to help make smart decisions with your money ( here's how ). In some cases, we receive a commission from our partners ; however, our opinions are our own. Terms apply to offers listed on this page.

  • Legally protecting yourself in case of an audit is the No. 1 reason to use a business bank account.
  • Different banks will offer different levels of convenience, and they'll come with different fees.
  • Fraud detection and other security features are especially important for protecting your business.

Insider Today

When starting a business, it can be overwhelming thinking about all the things you need to do and consider. However, it is essential that you do not overlook the value of opening a business bank account — usually both a business checking account and a high-yield business savings account .

As a CPA and financial planner, one of the first things I tell all my business owner clients to do is to keep their personal and business transactions separate. While there are a multitude of reasons you should have a separate bank account for your business, legal protection is certainly the most important.

If you experience an audit, it is important to have an easy way to track your business expenses and income. When business finances are commingled with personal finances, it becomes nearly impossible to provide a clear financial trail.

When choosing a business bank account, there are several important factors to consider. Here are four things I tell my business owner clients to consider when choosing a business bank account.

1. Access to banking services and customer service

When it comes to running a business, a variety of banking services can help you effectively manage your business finances. Beyond just opening a business bank account, you want to ensure that the financial institution you choose can provide access to services such as a checking account, savings account, business loans , wire transfers, fraud prevention services, a notary, checkbooks, business credit cards , online and mobile banking, and bill payment services.

If you want more one-on-one attention from a banker, consider opening an account with your local bank or credit union. You may also prefer a physical branch if you plan to make daily deposits or withdrawals of cash or checks.

This may be more challenging to do with an online bank. Many online banks may offer deposits and withdrawals, but their ATM network may not be as large as a well-known brick-and-mortar bank. For this reason, some small business owners open an account at their local bank where they have their personal accounts and know the level of customer service they will receive.

Consider opening your business checking and savings accounts at different financial institutions so that you can have access to both better banking services at a physical branch and higher interest rates at an online bank.

2. Terms and fees (including minimum balance)

The fees associated with business bank accounts can vary widely depending on the financial institution. Some of the most common fees to be aware of include monthly maintenance fees, overdraft fees , wire transfer fees, minimum balance fees, and ATM fees.

You may find that online banks charge fewer fees than brick-and-mortar banks, but you must consider this in conjunction with the other features.

Seek an account with reasonable fees that can accommodate your business.

3. Ease of paying contractors

Some business bank accounts, especially online accounts, offer free invoicing and bookkeeping software/features.

If you use accounting software (such as QuickBooks) to manage your business finances, accessing a business bank account that offers integration features may be desirable. Trust me, this will make your or your accountant's life much easier.

In addition, some accounts allow integrations with payroll and tax preparation software. This will help to make the process of paying contractors with 1099s more seamless.

4. The bank's security offerings

One of the most important things you should consider when choosing a business bank account is security. There are certain features that you want to look for to make sure your account is protected.

First, you want to make sure that the bank you choose is FDIC-insured (or NCUA-insured if a credit union). In addition, you want to make sure that the institution has additional layers of security such as multi-factor authentication and fraud detection services, which include account monitoring and alerts for suspicious activity.

Ensure that whatever bank you choose offers the best security features to protect your business from fraud.

When choosing a bank account, consider all the various banking features offered by different financial institutions to find the one that best suits your business's financial needs. Also, remember that your decision is not permanent. It is easy to switch banks if necessary.

  • Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. (Oppenheimer) agreed to pay a $12 million penalty;
  • Cambridge Investment Research Inc. (CIR), together with Cambridge Investment Research Advisors Inc. (CIRA) (collectively, Cambridge), agreed to pay a $10 million penalty;
  • Key Investment Services LLC (KIS), together with KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc. (KBCM) (collectively, Key), agreed to pay a $10 million penalty;
  • Lincoln Financial Advisors Corporation, together with Lincoln Financial Securities Corporation (collectively, Lincoln), agreed to pay an $8.5 million penalty;
  • U.S. Bancorp Investments Inc. (U.S. Bancorp) agreed to pay an $8 million penalty; and
  • The Huntington Investment Company (HIC), together with Huntington Securities Inc. (HSI) and Capstone Capital Markets LLC (Capstone) (collectively, Huntington), which self-reported, agreed to pay a $1.25 million penalty.

“Today’s actions against these 16 firms result from our continuing efforts to ensure that all regulated entities comply with the recordkeeping requirements, which are essential to our ability to monitor and enforce compliance with the federal securities laws,” said Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement. “Once again, one of these orders is not like the others: Huntington’s penalty reflects its voluntary self-report and cooperation.”

The SEC’s investigations uncovered pervasive and longstanding uses of unapproved communication methods, known as off-channel communications, at all 16 firms. As described in the SEC’s orders, the broker-dealer firms admitted that, from at least 2019 or 2020, their employees communicated through personal text messages about the business of their employers. The investment adviser firms admitted that their employees sent and received off-channel communications related to recommendations made or proposed to be made and advice given or proposed to be given. The firms did not maintain or preserve the substantial majority of these off-channel communications, in violation of the federal securities laws. By failing to maintain and preserve required records, some of the firms likely deprived the SEC of these off-channel communications in various SEC investigations. The failures involved employees at multiple levels of authority, including supervisors and senior managers.

Guggenheim Securities, CIR, Huntington, Key, Lincoln, NMIS, Oppenheimer, and U.S. Bancorp were each charged with violating certain recordkeeping provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and with failing to reasonably supervise with a view to preventing and detecting those violations. CIRA, GPIM, HIC, KIS, Lincoln, NMIM, and Mason Street were each charged with violating certain recordkeeping provisions of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and with failing to reasonably supervise with a view to preventing and detecting those violations.

In addition to the significant financial penalties, each of the firms was ordered to cease and desist from future violations of the relevant recordkeeping provisions and was censured. The firms also agreed to retain independent compliance consultants to, among other things, conduct comprehensive reviews of their policies and procedures relating to the retention of electronic communications found on personal devices and their respective frameworks for addressing non-compliance by their employees with those policies and procedures.

The SEC’s investigations into Guggenheim, Oppenheimer and U.S. Bancorp were conducted by Karolina Klyuchnikova, Austin Thompson, and Alison R. Levine and supervised by Thomas P. Smith Jr. of the New York Regional Office. The SEC’s investigations into Northwestern Mutual, Cambridge, Key, Lincoln, and Huntington were conducted by Som P. Dalal, Ruta G. Dudenas, Regina LaMonica, Amy S. Cotter, and Anne C. McKinley and supervised by Paul A. Montoya and Kathryn A. Pyszka of the Chicago Regional Office.
