How to choose an academic planner in the uk – buying guide.

It can be confusing trying to work out what you need from an academic planner, so let's run through the basic factors you should think about. Follow our tips and you'll easily find one that you can’t live without!

Do You Prefer to Organise Yourself by Day, Week, or Month?

Everyone is different when it comes to organisation, with some people prefering to plan months in advance while others like to operate on a day-to-day basis. Many academic planners have more than one layout - for example, weekly planners may also have a page for each month too. In this section, we'll discuss the main layout styles.

A Page a Day Gives You Enough Space for Regular Tasks

A Page a Day Gives You Enough Space for Regular Tasks

Daily academic planners provide space for you to organise yourself hour by hour , with a page per day to lay out all of your plans.

This style of planner is great for those with a lot going on who need to keep track of several tasks at once , or students with procrastination issues who perhaps need to write out a strict schedule. However, it may be too much space for some people, meaning that a lot of paper will be left blank!

Plan Ahead and Keep Track of Appointments With a Weekly Layout

Plan Ahead and Keep Track of Appointments With a Weekly Layout

This type of layout displays your whole week at a glance, so you can see the bigger picture. It's perfect if you like to check your availability for the whole week and pinpoint when your free time is. It's also great for keeping track of recurring events such as chores and appointments.

A Monthly Layout Is Best for Minimal Details

A Monthly Layout Is Best for Minimal Details

A monthly layout is the best option for anyone who prefers to have a general overview of major events or deadlines , rather than filling in their planner with daily tasks.

As we mentioned before though, some weekly planners also include pages with monthly layouts - so you might prefer to buy a product with a combination of the two!

When It Comes to Portability and Keeping Organised, Size Is Everything!

When It Comes to Portability and Keeping Organised, Size Is Everything!

If you’re going to be carrying your planner everywhere with you, the last thing you want is a huge, bulky tome that'll weigh down your bag. Buying a heavy planner just makes it more likely that you'll leave it at home - but you're not going to be able to write important study deadlines in it while it’s lying on your desk!

Similarly, if you intend to use your planner to help organise your personal time as well as your academic time, you should make sure it's big enough to fit of all your notes . Cramming lots of writing into a small space because you lack room could in fact cause you more stress and prove to be totally counterproductive!

Dated or Undated? Each Style Has Its Benefits

How annoying would it be to buy your dream planner only to find you can’t use it because the dates aren’t what you expected? In this section, we explain how to prevent this from happening by giving you all the info you need about both dated and undated planners.

Dated Planners Are Ready to Use Straight Away

Dated Planners Are Ready to Use Straight Away

An academic planner with the dates already printed requires little effort on your part, and will  usually cover 12-18 months , giving you ample space to input your coursework deadlines and exam dates.

However, you should check the time period before you buy , otherwise the dates might have already passed or they might not start until later in the year - meaning you'll either waste pages at the beginning or you won't be able to use your planner straight away.

Undated Planners Give You More Freedom

Undated Planners Give You More Freedom

Some academic planners don’t have dates printed in them at all , though, which can actually be pretty handy!

You can fill in the dates on the pages yourself and it doesn’t matter if you're on a break from school or university, as you can simply skip the dates you don't need and pick up where you left off once term starts again!

Extra Features Can Enhance Your Planning Experience

Extra Features Can Enhance Your Planning Experience

Academic planners can come with loads of different features and handy accessories at no extra cost, which makes life so much easier - and more fun! Common extras include bookmarks, pen loops, and pockets for storing things in.

Some planners also provide stickers to help you personalise each page, making the organisation process enjoyable rather than a chore. Plus, customising your planner can really help you to make a habit of using it - after all, if you invest time in something then you'll naturally want to stick with it.

Acorbis Undated Weekly Planner - Black

Undated Weekly Planner - Black Image 1

Logically Laid Out and Totally Customisable

This is planner has a luxurious feel, with its soft touch cover and premium quality paper. The days of the week in the weekly spreads are left blank, giving you the freedom to fill them out however you'd like - which is always a bonus if you like to customise your diary! It also has 50 dotted notes pages, providing ample space to write everything down that's on your mind.

Each page of this planner is logically laid out, and it includes brightly coloured stickers that you can use as a visual reminder for key dates. We reckon this product will appeal to organisation newbies and planning pros alike!

Box Clever Academic Diary 2020-2021

Academic Diary 2020-2021 Image 1

Affordable, With a Charming Floral Design

This planner is designed to help you succeed in every aspect of your life. You can input your work deadlines, plan the week's meals, write a shopping list, and know whose birthdays are coming up next month - pretty amazing, right? It's also spiral-bound, meaning it'll stay flat on your desk and won't unexpectedly close itself.

We think the design of this product is really attractive and fun, and it'll last for 18 whole months before it needs replacing. It's also lightweight and just the right size for popping into your bag . All this for such a reasonable price!

Rocket A5 Refillable Planner

A5 Refillable Planner Image 1

Flexible and Can Be Used Year After Year

This planner is a fantastic option if you want something that you can keep using year after year - simply buy some Rocket refills and you're good to go again! It comes with daily and weekly layouts included , plus some refill options also come with pages that show the month at a glance.

The binder is robust enough to last you a long time and the paper is really high quality, feeling much more expensive than its price tag would suggest. Rocket also provides info about how project plans and habit trackers can benefit you . So this planner not only keeps you organised, but actually teaches you how to work smarter, not harder!

Busy B Mid-Year Perfect Planner Diary

Mid-Year Perfect Planner Diary Image 1

Packed With Extra Features to Make Planning Easier

This planner goes above and beyond when it comes to extra features! It has an impressive four storage pockets and tear-out reminder lists to help you keep on track . The stickers included can be used to create visual cues for important dates, and the mini calendar on each page allows for advance planning.

The faux leather softback cover means that this planner might not hold up as well as a hardback diary when in your bag or out and about, but all of the extras make it worth buying anyway.

Moleskine 18-Month Extra Large Weekly Planner 2020/2021 with Hard Cover

18-Month Extra Large Weekly Planner 2020/2021 with Hard Cover Image 1

A Top-Quality Product From a Trusted Brand

Moleskine is an extremely popular brand amongst professionals, known for its stylish and robust stationery. Made from top-quality thick paper, this 18-month planner boasts a hardcover and an elastic strap closure to keep it closed when not in use. It's a decent size too, being compact enough to carry around but still providing plenty of space to make notes.

Again, this is most definitely a planner to keep you on track with your work, as it doesn't have room for info about your personal life . If you want a planner with additional sections to track habits or write down your aims, this may not be the best option for you.

Bright Day Academic Planner

Academic Planner Image 1

Simple but Straightforward

This planner has some great features to help you stay on top of your work - and we love the eyecatching lemon print design too! Sections like the class schedule pages will help you keep track of where you need to be at a certain time. Plus, the weekly page layouts have lots of space for noting down all of your important deadlines as well as your weekend plans.

As this planner is designed for academic use, it lacks space to jot down personal details like your goals or reflections , which can be found in other products on our list. Still, if you want something straightforward and fuss-free, you can't go wrong with this one!

Wordsworth Planner - Weekly & Monthly

Planner - Weekly & Monthly Image 1

Compact and Ready to Use Any Time

This is a really high-quality planner - it comes in a lovely box, wrapped in tissue paper, and includes cute stickers to help you make notes or highlight important dates . It's undated, so you can start using it whenever you want, and it lasts for a whole year but isn't bulky at all.

Unlike most of the other planners on our list, this one lacks a pocket and a pen loop . While these aren't essential features, we think they'd be useful additions that would enhance an already brilliant product.

Smart Planner Daily Schedule & Weekly Productivity Planner

Daily Schedule & Weekly Productivity Planner Image 1

A Pretty Planner With Plenty of Sections

While this may seem like more of a personal planner than an academic one, there are lots of useful features that will benefit your studying too. The review sections are handy if you like to take time to reflect on the past week in order to plan for the next one. There are also sections dedicated to finances, travel, and birthdays , which will help you to stay organised so you can focus fully on your studies.

Unfortunately, this planner is let down by the paper quality which isn't good enough to prevent ink from bleeding through to the next page. Plus, the layout is quite structured and doesn't leave any room for personalisation.

Priori Agenda Planner

Agenda Planner Image 1

Stay Focused With This 3-In-1 Diary

The Priori Agenda Planner contains three different layouts, meaning that you can keep track of absolutely everything - from work deadlines to holidays and birthdays. The three bookmarks in different colours allow you to flick between pages really easily and the two pockets are ideal for storing any important loose documents safely in one place.

Whilst there's room for lots of information in this planner, the pages already have pre-printed sections for you to fill in such as to-do lists, weekly goals, and hourly task slots. The controlled layout may work for some but it may not be flexible enough for others, as there's no way of adapting and personalising it.

Ever considered a study planner app to help keep track of your studies? Technology has made studying way more convenient, especially for those who may need an extra helping hand at keeping organised.

Are study planners effective?

Study planners, especially digital study planners are highly effective for those struggling to keep up, or for wanting an easy-to-access place for study-related notes and deadlines.

As a student, keeping organised is one of the keys to acing your studies. One of those ways is having a student planner or diary to hand. But let’s be honest, how often do you really use it? Does the thought of having to write out all of your tasks make you eye-roll?

What if you could keep your studies organised in just a few thumb taps and away you go?

If studies are getting on top of you, then a student planner app really can’t hurt to try.

Gone are the days of getting lost in hand-scrawled notes and trying to hunt down missing sheets of paper. Add one of the 10 best study planner apps to your university checklist , or simply keep your current studies and life schedule organised.

But of course, if you prefer keeping track of your studies the good old-fashioned way – why not check out our study and stationary discounts ?

Top 10 study planner apps

The Chipper app was built specifically with uni students in mind. Plan everything you’ve got going on, from exams to outings, to keep your life and studies on track. Here’s just some of its features:

Its digital planner lets you organise every aspect of your life

Set reminders

It can remind you to complete homework, notify you of exam days and other events you set

If you like making lists then this app is a dream! You can list out each step for your assignments and exams using their Subtasks feature

Set study timers

Its built-in alarm feature means you can set study timers

Motivational tools

Chipper helps you build healthy studying habits thanks to its progress tools.

Get Chipper for free on iOS or Android .

You can probably guess what this app is about purely from the name. It’s a simple app that acts as your to-do list!

The simplicity of it gives it its charm. You may argue you could just use your Notes app to write your to-do list, but the tick box next to each task on Todoist makes things all that more satisfying.

Break each task down into subtasks, add due dates, assign peers to tasks and much more. Much like Chipper, you can also set timers for each task too, which is great for keeping you on track with assignments.

Download Todoist on iOS or Android .

Focus To-Do: Pomodoro & Tasks

Tons of studies show how the Pomodoro technique is fantastic for productivity. If you’ve never heard of it before, the Pomodoro technique is named after the classic tomato timer you have in your kitchen.

It works by setting a timer to 25 minutes and focusing on a single task. When the timer ends, you take a 5 minute break. After four “Pomodoros†(25-minute work-intervals), you take longer breaks in 5 minute increments.

This app is literally based on science, so who can argue with that? Manage your to-do list, time your tasks, set reminders, track what you work on the most and much more!

Why the Pomodoro technique works

It helps those who get distracted easily and lose track of time

Keeps goals and task completion realistic – i.e, stops you biting off more than you can chew

It’s especially useful for those who enjoy gamified task completion

Focus To-Do: Pomodoro & Tasks is available for free on iOS or Android .

My study life

Students, teachers and lecturers have all highly praised the My Study Life digital planner app for managing tasks and assignments in one place. Plus, there’s no ads that’ll distract you whilst using the app, despite it being totally free to use!

The app lets you synchronise all of your data between apps, so if you’ve forgotten your laptop or tablet, you can still use the app on the go with your Smartphone — even in offline mode. It’s one of the best study planner apps out there if you ask us!

Get My Study Life for free (and ad-free) on iOS or Android .

iStudiez Pro Legendary Planner

iStudiez has garnered a huge reputation over the years. Pop everything you need, like lessons, lecturers, contact details and assignments into your digital planner. Plus, if you’re into colour coding things, then this app is definitely for you.

View your planner in daily, weekly and monthly views to see what’s ahead. Viewing by day lets you see what tasks you have coming up and you can move things around at the drop of a hat.

If like most students you have alternating weeks, you can set your study planner to reflect this!

Get iStudiez on iOS only.

Taskheat — Visual To-Do List

Taskheat — Visual To-Do List, wasn’t specifically designed for students. But in terms of how visual it is, it would work fantastic for those who need to organise their tasks in an interesting way.

The app makes use of flow charts and colours to keep things looking neat and organised. It also lets you see which tasks are connected to each other for easy organisation. If you’re bound to forget about deadlines, its handy notification feature will make sure you stay on track too.

Use Apple products? All of your data automatically syncs with iCloud, meaning you can access Taskheat on any Apple device you own.

Everyday – Track Habits & Goals

Yet another app that wasn’t specifically designed for students. Everyday isn’t a planner as such, but more of a habit and goal tracker.

Why would a habit tracker be useful for students? It helps form discipline and visualises your progress with colours you input on each day. Overtime, whether that’s over the week, month or year, you can see how habits and positive changes have been formed.

Simply add all the habits or goals you wish to track, and pop a colour in to indicate whether you worked towards it.

Get Everyday on iOS , Android and Google Chrome .

Think of Trello as a virtual pinboard without the extra weight and stationary. It’s a visual tool that allows you to create lists and cards (your tasks) underneath those lists.

It’s fantastic for team projects, making it a good student planner, but also works as a handy self-organiser for all sorts of things. It’s totally free to use and available on both Apple and Android devices too.

Assign cards to peers, add deadlines, add a cool background to keep you motivated and use coloured labels to categorise your cards. The beauty of Trello is that it’s completely customisable. Make organisational boards about pretty much everything!

Get Trello on iOS or Android .

myHomework Student Planner

Get access to assignments anywhere and anytime with the myHomework Student Planner. It’s been on the block since 2009 and is a popular go-to for students and teachers.

The developer of myHomework insisted on a very minimalistic and simple interface, making it easy to hit the ground running and organising your study schedule. Whilst the app offers a paid feature, its free one comes with tons of features:

Track assignments, projects, tests and more…

Track classes

Receive due date reminders

Sync between devices

Cloud storage

If you prefer working in blocks or periods, myHomework can be used as such.

Get myHomework on iOS or Android .

Egenda – Homework manager

If you struggle to complete homework on time, then Egenda is your next best friend. Designed specifically to keep you on top of your homework, Egenda lets you manage your homework, tests and assignments in one place.

The app also has a notification feature to keep you on track about what’s due the next day. Plus, you can add notes to your assignments and add users to specific tasks that involve group work.

Filter your homework by class, due date and colour. It really is that simple – and simple is always good!

Get Egenda on iOS and Android .

How to create a good study plan

Downloading a study planner app, even if it’s the best study planner app out there, it’s kind of useless if you don’t use them in a way that’s productive and beneficial for your studies.

Here are some really simple yet super effective ways to create a study plan that works for you.

Be honest about your study habits (or lack thereof)

There’s no shame in not having had a study plan before. What better time than the present to get started!

If you’ve noticed you burn out easily, or things are going through one ear and out of the other, it might be time to switch up your learning style too.

Look at your current schedule

Do you actually have time to study during the week? Are there any gaps where you can fit in study time? See where you can make room and plan accordingly.

Plan how much study time each class or assignment needs

Some classes, homework, and assignments will take longer than others to complete. If you know you need the extra time, see where you can cut back on other commitments.

Develop a study schedule using one of our recommended study planner apps

We recommend giving them all a go! At the end of the day, one of them may work better for you than the other. So why not give them a download, have a play around and see which one you want to make a concrete schedule with?

Stick to your study plan

This is a given, but once you’ve found something that works for you, make it a point of sticking to it. Not only will this help propel your studies, but you’ll ultimately feel far less stressed out.

Plus, the benefit of study planner apps is most, if not all, have notifications enabled. Meaning you can set notifications for when you need to complete your tasks or study!

Which apps do you like the look of? If you’re on the lookout for new courses to study, check out our New Skills Academy student discounts and get a few of these apps to get your studies organised!

I found some of the best academic planners for back to school season

I rounded up some of my favourite planners as back to school season fast approaches

  • 06:00, 11 AUG 2022

mål paper's 'daily goal setter' planner

Back to school season is well and truly upon us and for me the most exciting part of that was always getting to going stationery shopping.

I would browse online for hours and go over the advantages of different paper gsm measurements (always landing firmly on 100gsm being a lovely thickness just above the standard 80).

From new pens and highlighters to special notebooks for every subject, it's safe to say that I was obsessed. So it makes me feel quite qualified to round up some of what I'm considering the best planners to get your life on track this academic year.

Moleskine Student Life

Moleskine Student Life

Moleskine has always been a classic brand for everything paper, my journals, planners and even watercolour painting books have all worn the brands signature style at one point or another.

So when I saw the 2022-2023 academic planner, I knew it was going to be a hit. This planner is best for people who like to really keep track of things, I say this because there's a habit tracker at the start of every month were you can easily see at a glance if you've remembered to drink enough water, go for a run or whatever you personally want to track as it is fully customisable.

The paper itself is on the thinner side with Moleskine traditionally having 70gsm paper, but it makes up for it in quality and features.

Moleskine Student Life

It's such a great planners for reflective students, with it having a monthly review asking questions for personal growth such as 'what am I most proud of' and 'how can I grow next month?'.

I think with the stresses of academic life it is key to take moments to reflect on the good and truly admire your progress.

You can buy the planner directly from Moleskine or on Amazon with an option for same day delivery on Prime.

Rocketbook Academic Planner

Rocketbook Academic Planner

For those who can't stand throwing things away, Rocketbook might be your best bet. Rocketbook uses synthetic paper, that feels slightly like a white board for a very specific goal.

When you use the Pilot FriXion pen, that comes with the planner, you can wipe the page clean over and over again to use it as many times as you need.

There's specific pages for class schedules, daily workloads and your weekly goals and you don't have to miss out on what you wipe off as you can blast your notes all over to the Rocketbook App.

You can buy the planner directly from Rocketbook or over on Amazon with free delivery.

Mål Paper Daily Goal Setter

mål paper's 'daily goal setter' planner

The Mål Paper Daily Goal Setter is probably my favourite planner on the market, it comes undated which I actually really like as it means you can start it up at any time of year without resenting the fact you've not used a month or two.

There's a monthly planner section where you can easily keep track of upcoming projects, holidays and any general plans at a glance. Then there's a daily page where you can easily track to do lists, jot down an affirmation and reflect on something great that happened that day.

mål paper's 'daily goal setter' planner

There's also a motivational quote at the bottom of every page which I think is a lovely pick me up on stressful days.

You can grab it in black, grey or tan and the faux leather cover holds up well with everyday wear and tear, there are two ribbon dividers so you can easily find your monthly plan and your current day plan.

It's great quality and I like that you write in each day so if you miss one you don't have to skip past blank pages to get onto your next to do list.

You can buy this planner directly from the brand or from Amazon , who have it on sale at the time of writing.

Whether your life is a carefully considered landscape plotted with military precision or a chaotic whirlwind of missed appointments and abandoned deadlines, chances are you could benefit from a planner.

A planner goes further than a diary – it is an aid to optimum organisation. From boxes to tick or stickers to help keep you organised, a planner feels more interactive than a diary.

Planners tend to be chunkier, heavier and with more “to do” within them. We also noticed how many planners now promote practising gratitude, mindfulness and encourage positivity and self-care.

Some planners don’t even denote year, so we’ve included a couple of these in this round-up.

You might think that in a world increasingly governed by technology paper planers aren’t necessary –but in fact there’s plenty of research which suggests that there are numerous benefits of putting pen to paper.

Related stories

From practising mindfulness to focusing on a specific facet of life from academia to social media, or placing your goals into digestible lists, or becoming a surrogate PA, we think there’s a planner in this round up to suit anyone.

Prepare to plan like you’ve never planned before.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

My PA Planner 2021

Cover MyPA Planner copy.jpg

This is for anyone who has ever said “I need an assistant” but can’t afford to pay a human being. The MY PA Planner is every professional’s ticket out of chaos and into a streamlined efficient life thanks to what is essentially a goal-setting system on both a focused (daily) and zoomed-out (yearly) basis – as well as weekly and monthly too.

Each week there’s an inspirational quote to focus on – and you’ll be required to spend time writing down goals, tasks and appointments on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Getting plans on paper makes it harder to forget or abandon. There is also plenty of space for writing down reflections and reviews to ensure achievements are celebrated and mistakes are understood.

But it’s not all work, work, work. There is space for fitness and mental health goals – and even a prompt for drinking enough water. It’s like having someone hold your hand and keep you on track – an antidote to procrastination, which will be music to many ears, especially in a world where being sucked into social media “scroll holes” is the norm.

MiGoals Goal Digger Planner

GOALDIGGER copy.png

The pun is just the start of this planner’s brilliance. It is a sleek, understated cover in PU leather and contains all sorts of ways to keep busy people focused, motivated and positive. As you might guess from the name this planner is goal-centric – even if you aren’t sure what your goals even are. From the very start, this planner asks users to think about what they are passionate about, what they want in the long and short term and what they value. It’s a week to view layout but also includes space for to-do lists and – brilliantly, a habit tracker.

We’re often told to write our behaviours things down to see if habits, patterns or cycles emerge – but how many of us ever do that? We love that there’s a dedicated space for this! Ditto budgets. The different fields, lines and boxes might seem intimidating when you first flick through, but everything comes together beautifully to help you live your life reaching goals on micro and macro levels. This planner is kind of like having a coach, cheerleader, financial advisor, PA and therapist all in one go. It is light to hold, discreet to carry and just the start of a goal smashing journey!

Pink Motel Planner

PAPIER MOTEL copy.png

This cover is so extra – a visual pick-me-up if ever we saw one, not least because you can have your name emblazoned across the front! This undated 16-week planner is designed to help you reflect on the past and plan the future. You can choose when you need some extra help planning and getting organised. We really enjoyed the mind map page – a really simple and useful tool for anyone feeling overwhelmed by life’s complications. Each week has three overview pages and seven daily pages (one page per day) for your daily schedule and to-dos. You’ll also have a habit tracker – genius – and some nine blank pages for notes.

Original Dodo Pad 2021

This is the 55th edition of the brainchild of John Verney – a book which would serve as a diary, calendar, doodle jotter and notebook for anyone with hectic schedules. Each week is laid out as a grid with spaces for up to five family members to enter their plans. The spread is decorated with doodles, random facts (“a centurion is a soldier who’s been in the Roman army for 100 years”), silly puns and more. There is even space for note-making and receipt filing.  We love the perforated bottom right corner – a deeply satisfying way of marking the passing of time.

Planner Pad

Hello cute addition to any desk! A souped-up to-do list with a beautiful border! We love the disposable nature of this daily pad – once the day is done, you peel it off and recycle it, ready to start afresh tomorrow. This is one of the here and now and it’s perfect for anyone who loves beautiful things on a budget.

Weekly Planner 2021

This planner is so pretty: gorgeous cloth cover in a grey – although other understated muted shades are also available. It arrives in a box: ours came with a beautiful penholder which attaches to the pages – who knew these were such a good idea? The binding is great because it allows the book to lie flat – rather than making you have to squash it down or endure pages flipping about all over the place. It’s small details like this which massively enhance a user’s experience. Each week is set out over a double-page spread and the entire book is punctuated with motivational or thought-provoking quotes.

Zodiac Daily Planner

This planner is not dated, which is perfect for people who have bursts of planning and productivity rather than a steady stream. We actually think this planner would be brilliant for dedicated, specific projects. The cover is linen and adorned with silver constellations – and it feels much more expensive than it is.

The Positive Planner

The Positive Planner HELLO.jpg

This is an undated journal spanning 12 weeks and with a focus on self-care and, as the name suggests, positivity. We are obsessed with the cover – a block of brilliant sunshine yellow, nothing if not the ultimate symbol of optimism! The planner promotes the art of journaling as a means to practice mindfulness. However, it does have an organisational bent – monthly diary spreads allow you to plot and plan, while space for lists is abundant. This is a great way to balance a frantic life with self-care.

2021 Social Media Diary & Planner

Every content creator – whether professional or personal – had their prayers answered when Janet Murray created what is essentially a social media bible by way of diary. It is full of key calendar dates – holidays, awareness dates, commemorations – you name it, it’s in there. This helps anyone planning social media content and strategy to work out how their content might be shaped and ensures that no occasion is forgotten. But best of all, Janet painstakingly takes you through quarterly content planning at the very beginning of the volume – offering professional hints and tips from a sales and marketing perspective. Each month offers separate “diaries” for content planning (each platform has its own especially logoed space!) and offline life. There’s a lot to get your head around when you first pick this A4 planner up – but for anyone whose work relies on an online buzz, this feels like it could change your business.

Landscape Wall Planner

Granted this isn’t portable but it is the most satisfying thing to look at – the entire year laid out across one space. It is an easy, simple way to have an overview of your plans. Obviously, the space dedicated to each day is small but this wall planner is all about breadth of planning rather than depth. The paper is lovely quality and easy to write on. It comes in a very smart envelope too, ideal for gifting.

Original 2021 Daily Planner

This is a serious piece of planning kit. Not only does it look the part with monochrome tiling and gold “month” tabs on the inside – it is absolutely teeming with ways to make your life easier and more productive. The planner opens with a helpful “how-to” guide to using the planner – which you can follow religiously or ignore completely. It essentially advises how to sort through your goals on a daily, weekly and monthly basis making it seem more of a process to go through rather than a mountain to climb. We were really inspired by the introduction of “10 minute accomplishments” – watering plants, light dusting, sorting receipts – not least because they turn from “chores” into something much more positive. We also loved the"‘I rock at…" sections. Self-praise is something most of us need to get better at! Also, as an added bonus, because 2021 is Hello Day’s 5th year all planners will arrive in a beautiful hard box featuring all of their designs since the company launched!

The Verdict: Planners

All of the planners here are going to help anyone reach goals and become more organised and efficient. The MY PA planner covers all bases and really does the job of an assistant! It looks smart, is sufficiently weighty and doesn’t lean on any gimmicks or pointless flourishes. We also highly recommend anyone whose life is heavily dependent on or inspired by social media to check out Janet Murray’s planner – as it is truly invaluable as a tool for any content creator.

Help them plan for success all year long.

College of academic planners for students, including Five Star Planner + Study App and MyStudyLife

(Just a heads up, WeAreTeachers may collect a share of sales from the links on this page. We only recommend items our team loves!)

Working with us will ensure that your students have the best possible tool to plan, work and organise and your school gets the very most out of your investment in your student planners.

Promotes your Corporate Identity

Allow us to customise your front cover in-line with your school ‘corporate identity’ or pick one of our cover ideas. Include all your vital information, like term dates and uniform policy, keeping students and parents informed.

Visual Benefits

Research suggests we are more likely to remember things if we have written them down by hand. Whilst typing can perhaps be quicker, actually spelling it out with pen and paper helps your brain to retain the information. Your students can highlight or colour code important dates or specific tasks they want to stand out in their planner and update quickly and easier than a online planning system.

Comprehensive Planning Resource

A student planner should be a comprehensive planning resource and not just for recording homework tasks and assignments. Schools that we work with see the benefits of including things such as target setting, progress checking, self evaluation, revision and study regimes. All this in one place so that your students stay on track!

Classic planner.

Our classic student planner is a full colour planner that is suitable for all year groups and key stages. Why not add some of these innovative additions to your student planner to enhance the effectiveness of it.

Traffic Light Cards

Traffic light cards are a great way for students to communicate with the teacher. You can also add annotation to the traffic light cards, for example with printed ticks, crosses, smiley faces etc.

Open up another communication channel between student and teacher by incorporating a ‘show me’ whiteboard on the back cover of your student planner.

Plastic Wallets

We can bind a plastic wallet into your pupil diary to provide your students with additional storage space.

Corner Pockets

You can use these as a method of preventing additional notes from falling out of the pupil diary or being lost.

Alternative Cover Printing

Extra customised pages.

Most of our student planners come with 16 customised printed pages. If this is not enough, we can easily incorporate additional pages.

Colour Pages

You can use full colour to enhance your student planners. Make the page stand out so students are drawn to the information.

Coloured Paper

Using coloured paper for your customised pages can help to distinguish between sections.

Page Markers

Page markers help the students mark their place and they can also use the page markers as a ruler and a protractor.

Money latest: Big drop in energy bills expected to be announced at 7am on Friday

Based on wholesale costs, the cap is expected to fall to £1,656 per year for a typical dual-fuel household - a 14% decrease from the current level. Read this and more in the Money blog, your place for consumer and economic news. Listen to the latest Ian King podcast as you scroll.

Thursday 22 February 2024 21:53, UK

  • Cheap Eats : Michelin Guide chef picks favourites in South Yorkshire

Respected predictor Cornwall Insight has released its final prediction for Friday's energy price cap announcement.

Based on wholesale costs, the cap is expected to fall to £1,656 per year for a typical dual-fuel household - a 14% decrease from the current level.

The current price cap sits at £1,928 a year for a typical household.

Although this means energy bills will get cheaper, this prediction is slightly higher than the previous forecast from Cornwall Insight.

It previously said the cap was likely to drop 15% to £1,635.

Here's what else you need to know...

We'll be hearing at 7am on Friday what the new energy price cap will be from April.

The cap is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

It doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

It changes every three months - in January, April, July and October.

The changes are mostly based on the costs faced by suppliers for providing energy.

Who is covered by the energy price cap?

Most households will be covered by the energy price cap.

You'll know you're on a price-capped tariff if you're on a standard variable tariff.

Diageo, the FTSE-100 alcoholic beverages giant, is exploring the sale of a trio of non-core brands including Pimm's , the quintessentially English drink.

Takeaway couriers from Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat are planning to strike every Friday and bank holiday unless they get a pay rise, according to a report .

About 5,000 couriers in London and others in Liverpool, Newcastle, Brighton and Oxford will not be picking up orders from 5pm until 10pm on those days, The Sun has reported.

They want a fee of at least £5 per order - a rise on the minimum £2.80 paid by Uber Eats and £3.15 by Deliveroo.

Boeing has ousted the executive responsible for rolling out its troubled 737 MAX planes.

The dismissal comes weeks after a panel on a new 737 MAX 9 aircraft blew out in midair, reigniting safety concerns over Boeing's 737 MAX fleet.

Average pay rises have fallen and they are unlikely to reach levels seen last year, a leading HR site has found.

Pay rises dropped to 5.1% in the three months to January compared with 6% in the previous quarter, XpertHR data revealed.

XpertHR's senior content manager Sheila Attwood warned there were signs the 6% pay award seen in 2023 will not be matched in 2024.

"We are already beginning to see that around half of employee groups are receiving settlements worth less than their previous award," she said.

"The financial pressure from high inflation levels and elevated pay awards budgets in 2023 may mean that organisations will be limiting their budgets in 2024 in response."

While this might not be welcome news for employees, high wages contribute to inflation - which affects all of us in what we pay for goods.

Wage rises coming down, if these figures are replicated in official data, would make an interest rate cut more likely.

NatWest has just told brokers it will also be increasing mortgage rates tomorrow, the Money blog can reveal following on from HSBC's announcement (see 12.05pm post).

New customers will see hikes of between 0.10 and 0.15 percentage points while for existing customers it's between 0.15 and 0.20.

These are on two and five-year fixed deals.

Speaking to Newspage, Justin Moy, managing director at EHF Mortgages, said: "Today, yet another major high street lender has pushed rates further out of reach of borrowers.

"NatWest may be following the rest of the mainstream lenders but the collective reaction from lenders to higher swap rates will inevitably kill off all those improvements everyone worked hard for in January this year.

"Right now, it feels like 2023 is happening all over again. Someone has pressed the mortgage rewind button."

Santander, Coventry and TSB have all raised rates this week - though today Halifax went against the grain and announced some cuts from Friday . It's not clear by how much.

As discussed earlier, swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to offer mortgages - have been creeping up, and lenders are passing this on.

There is a feeling markets may have got carried away with expectations of an early base rate cut this year - leading mortgage rates to fall. What seems to be happening now is a readjustment, with forecasts for a base rate cut having shifted back from May to June.

Four people have been arrested in police raids by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Three residences in Merseyside and Greater Manchester were raided this week as the SFO announced an investigation into Signature Group, which had a portfolio of hotels in Liverpool before it went into administration in 2020.

When it collapsed, it had losses of up to £140m.

The business had attracted over a thousand British and international investors to redevelop iconic landmarks such as Belfast's Scottish Mutual Building and the Coal Exchange in Cardiff, the SFO said.

Signature Group bought up predominantly historic buildings in the UK to be redeveloped into luxury hotels, residential apartments and office spaces.

Investors either loaned money to Signature Group or bought a hotel room, apartment or office space in one of the group's properties, with promised returns on their investment of between 8% and 15%.

Among the properties in its portfolio was a cruise liner marketed as a "flotel" that would be moored off Canary Wharf in London and travel to Ibiza.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the SFO, said: "The scheme offered attractive returns and used much-loved local landmarks to lure investors.

"We have people up and down the country left out of pocket, and buildings left derelict at the centre of our cities."

Fish and chips could be at risk after Russia pulled out of a long-standing deal with the UK.

A 1956 agreement that allows British boats to fish in the Barents Sea has been ripped up, in the latest sign of growing tensions between Moscow and the West.

The fishing deal was signed by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, but Russian politicians have now claimed it was never in the national interest.

Last year, Sky News reported that up to 40% of cod and haddock consumed in the UK comes from Russia and Russian territory - with Moscow accused of "weaponising food".

HSBC has announced it will reprice its mortgage rates upwards from tomorrow - following similar moves by Santander, Coventry and TSB this week.

The lender hasn't revealed how much rates are going up but the Money blog understands it will affect existing and new residential customers across all the main loan-to-value and fixed-term categories.

HSBC is the last major lender with a sub 4% deal - this now appears likely to go.

The apparent reason for these increases is that swap rates - which dictate how much it costs lenders to offer mortgages - have been creeping up.

We've got some reaction from the industry.

Ashley Thomas, director at Magni Finance, told Newspage: "HSBC hiking rates is yet another hammer blow to Britain's beleaguered property market. 2024 started on a high but those days now feel like a distant memory as more lenders reprice upwards."

This sentiment was echoed by Michelle Lawson, director at Lawson Financial, who told Newspage: "Another one bites the dust. We have returned to uncertain times in the mortgage and property market. Hopefully things will settle down soon as the property industry is such a trigger for so many others. The yo-yoing is no good for anyone."

David Hollingworth, associate director at L&C Mortgages, offered a more sanguine view, telling the Money blog...

"This could feel like a retrograde step for borrowers but it is a far cry from the very rapid and steep increases that we saw post mini-budget and again last summer.

"Market rates aren't skyrocketing in the same way that would force a sharp and significant rise in borrowing costs but it is enough that lenders are having to adjust in the face of higher funding costs.

"I expect there will still be plenty of jockeying for position as the market remains extremely competitive but in the short term we may still see more movement in mortgage rates."

Offering advice to prospective borrowers, Mr Hollingworth said: "For now at least, anyone that was holding off in the hope of further cuts may want to reassess their position."

The supermarket has urgently recalled various cookies over fears they could contain metal.

Lidl has issued point of sale notices in its stores, according to the Food Standards Agency.

Customers have been told not to eat these products and to return them to the store for a full refund.

Security experts have urged Android users to delete five apps from their phones immediately over fears they are infected with malware.

Samsung Galaxy phones are particularly at risk from the nasty bug called Anatsa, which is a banking trojan.

It is capable of performing actions on a victim's phone without them knowing, including taking money from their bank account.

The apps, which had been available on the Google Play Store, are:

  • Phone Cleaner – File Explorer
  • PDF Viewer – File Explorer
  • PDF Reader – Viewer & Editor
  • Phone Cleaner: File Explorer
  • PDF Reader: File Manager

Experts at security company Threat Fabric said the apps pose a "critical" threat to Android users.

"A unique aspect of this dropper was its malicious code, specifically targeting Samsung devices," the company said in a statement.

"The malicious AccessibilityService was tailored to interact with the UI [user interface] elements of Samsung devices, meaning only Samsung users were impacted in this phase of the campaign.

"This suggests that the threat actors initially developed and tested their code exclusively for Samsung devices."

The apps have now been removed from the store, but you should check your device to make sure you don't have them downloaded already because you could be at risk.

A Google spokesperson told news sites: "All of the apps identified in the report have been removed from Google Play. Android users are automatically protected against known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect, which is on by default on Android devices with Google Play Services.

"Google Play Protect can warn users or block apps known to exhibit malicious behaviour, even when those apps come from sources outside of Play."
